Chapter 16 - 16

Chapter 16: Awakening Protocol

CDC Base – Sublevel Medical Wing

The corridor was quiet except for the soft hum of generators.

Rick Grimes lay on a hospital bed in the isolation ward, IV fluids dripping steadily into his arm.

Dr. Gail Mark ones checked his vitals again, her expression focused.

"Stable… but still unconscious."

Wu Fan stood behind the glass observation window, arms crossed.

"How long until he wakes?"

Gail hesitated. "Could be hours. Could be days. Severe dehydration, muscle atrophy… he's lucky to be alive at all."

Wu Fan nodded slightly.

Lucky, yes.

Or important.

System panel flickered in his vision:

[Subject: Rick Grimes]

[Status: Coma (Stable)]

[Recovery Estimate: Variable]

[Evaluation: High Narrative Value Target]

Wu Fan closed it.

Narrative value again.

He was getting used to that term.

Across the facility, life at the CDC base continued.

Security recruits trained on the rooftop.

Researchers moved between labs.

Survivors adapted to the structured system of points, rules, and quarantine.

Everything was stabilizing.

Too smoothly.

But Wu Fan knew better.

Peace in this world was always temporary.

Sublevel 1 – Quarantine Wing

Andrea and Amy sat in separate rooms, observing the sterile environment.

Ten minutes of hot water had already changed their perception of survival.

Amy lay back on the bed.

"It's… actually safe here."

Andrea didn't answer immediately.

Her eyes remained on the locked door.

Safe places in a world like this usually had a cost.

Elsewhere, Morgan Jones trained silently with Brock and Sandra in a controlled firing range.

Each shot was more precise than the last.

But his expression remained hollow.

He didn't speak much since the hospital.

Until today.

CDC Command Hall

Wu Fan called everyone to assemble.

Security personnel. Researchers. Key survivors.

Dr. Jenner stood to one side, holding data sheets.

Gail Markones remained near the medical station.

Morgan stood quietly at the back.

Andrea and Amy observed from the upper walkway.

Wu Fan stepped forward.

"We're no longer just surviving."

Silence.

"We now have three priorities."

He raised one finger.

"Security expansion."

Second finger.

"Resource acquisition."

Third finger.

"And research acceleration."

He lowered his hand.

"Which means… we need field teams operating farther than Atlanta."

Marcus frowned. "How far?"

Wu Fan looked at him.

"Far enough that coming back won't be guaranteed."

A heavy silence followed.

Dr. Jenner adjusted his glasses.

"The vaccine research is progressing, but slowly. We need more samples, more infected subjects, and more equipment from other hospitals."

Gail added quietly,

"And more intact medical storage facilities."

Wu Fan nodded.

"Then we expand operations."

Suddenly—

A system alert appeared.

[Warning: External signal detected near perimeter]

Wu Fan's eyes narrowed.

That was new.

Rooftop Security Post

Sandra was the first to notice movement.

"Boss… you should see this."

Through the binoculars—

A small group of survivors stood outside the CDC fence.

Not armed like the mine group.

Not organized like Morgan.

Disorganized.

Desperate.

And among them—

One man with a sheriff-style uniform.

Inside the hall, Wu Fan arrived at the gate control panel.

He looked through the reinforced glass.

The man outside raised his hands.

"Please! We saw the vehicle earlier! We're not bitten!"

The crowd behind him looked exhausted.

Starved.

Morgan stepped forward immediately when he saw them.

"I know them."

Wu Fan glanced at him.

"You do?"

Morgan nodded slowly.

"Some of them… were from nearby counties. Police evac attempts. They didn't make it to the main convoy."

Wu Fan studied them for a moment.

Another group of survivors.

Another batch of manpower.

Another set of variables.

He turned to Marcus.

"Open the gate halfway. Armed escort only."

Sandra immediately raised her rifle.

"Understood."

The gate slowly lifted.

The survivors flinched as armed soldiers emerged in formation.

But they didn't run.

They were too tired to run.

Wu Fan stepped forward.

His voice was calm.

"Welcome to the CDC base."

He paused.

"From this moment… you either work, or you don't stay."

One of the survivors collapsed to his knees.

"We'll work… anything… just don't leave us outside."

System panel flickered again.

[New Survivors Detected]

[Estimated Recruitment Potential: High]

[Points Reward: +Variable Upon Integration]

Wu Fan exhaled softly.

More people.

More control.

More stability.

But then—

Inside the medical wing—

A machine beeped sharply.

Dr. Gail's voice came through the intercom.

"Boss."

"…Rick Grimes is waking up."
