Chapter 1 - Dimension Zero

Kai woke to the taste of ash and the sensation of gravel pressing into his cheek.

For a disorienting moment, he thought he was still in the Thornveil training grounds, having pushed himself too hard again. His father would scold him for overexertion and his mother would bring tea and the world would make sense. Then memory crashed back like a wave—Markus's sneering face, Elena's cold eyes, the Void Severing Needle twisting in his core—and the fantasy shattered.

He pushed himself up on shaking arms and immediately regretted it. Every muscle screamed. His dantian was an empty void where power should have been, and his essence channels felt like dry riverbeds. The cultivation base he had spent fifteen years building was gone. Utterly and completely gone.

But he was alive.

Kai looked around, blinking against the grey light. The sky above was the color of wet concrete—no sun, no clouds, just an endless flat expanse of dull metallic grey that seemed to press down on the world like a coffin lid. The ground beneath him was cracked earth the color of old bone, stretching to the horizon in every direction. Jagged formations of dark rock rose from the plains like broken teeth. In the distance, something massive moved through a haze of grey dust—too far away to identify, but large enough to make the ground tremble beneath his feet.

"Where am I?"

A translucent blue rectangle appeared in his field of vision, hovering about two feet from his face. The text flickered and glitched, characters occasionally scrambling into unreadable symbols before resolving back.

Kai stared at the floating panel for a long moment, then looked down at his hands. They were thinner than he remembered, the skin stretched over bones that seemed too prominent. The Void Severing Needle had done its work thoroughly. He was weaker than a child beginning their first day of cultivation training.

"Dimension Zero," he muttered. "I've heard stories. The dumping ground of the multiverse. The place where things go to be forgotten." The stories had always been told as cautionary tales—behave, or you'll be sent to Dimension Zero. No one actually believed it was real. No one had ever been there and returned to tell the tale.

And yet here he was.

A low growl pulled his attention from his existential crisis. Twenty feet away, something was emerging from behind a cluster of rock formations. It was roughly the size of a large dog, but that was where any resemblance to a normal animal ended. Its body was made of what appeared to be solidified shadow, dark and shifting, with four legs that ended in needle-sharp claws. Its eyes were pinpricks of sickly green light. A mane of what looked like smoke rose from its back, undulating in a wind Kai couldn't feel.

"The System says run," Kai said, watching the hound circle him slowly, its shadowy body leaving dark trails on the grey ground. "The System says I'll die." He bent down and picked up a sharp piece of rock. It wasn't much of a weapon, but it was better than nothing. "The System clearly doesn't know who it's dealing with."

The Shadow Hound lunged.

Kai had been trained by the Thornveil family's combat masters since he could walk. His body was broken, his cultivation destroyed, but muscle memory was something the Void Severing Needle couldn't take from him. He sidestepped the lunge—barely—and brought the rock down on the hound's neck. It passed through the shadowy flesh like striking water, barely leaving a mark. The hound twisted impossibly fast and raked its claws across Kai's forearm. Three parallel lines of fire erupted on his skin, and he stumbled backward, blood already soaking his torn sleeve.

"Okay," he gasped. "Physical attacks don't work well. Noted."

The hound pressed its advantage, snapping and slashing with terrifying speed. Kai gave ground, buying time, analyzing. The creature was fast but predictable—it always led with its right paw, and it telegraphed its lunges by lowering its head a fraction of a second before striking. These were the observations of a seasoned fighter, not a broken man. Kai's mind, at least, was still sharp.

His eyes caught something—a faint glow at the base of the hound's spine, where the shadowy flesh was thinnest. A core. Like a cultivation core, but raw and unrefined. Every essence creature had one. It was their center of power and their greatest vulnerability.

The hound lunged again. This time, Kai didn't dodge. He dropped to one knee, letting the creature sail over him, and drove the rock upward with every ounce of strength he had left. The sharp edge caught the hound directly in the glowing point at the base of its spine. The creature let out a sound that wasn't quite a howl and wasn't quite a scream—a discordant shriek that vibrated in Kai's bones. Shadowy matter exploded outward like a ruptured balloon, and the hound collapsed into a puddle of dissipating darkness.

Kai lay on his back, breathing hard, staring up at the grey sky. His forearm burned, his body ached, and he was pretty sure two of his ribs were cracked from the fall. But he was alive. Again.

A faint warmth spread through Kai's body as the absorbed essence settled into his empty channels. It was a trickle compared to the river he had once commanded, but it was something. It was a start.

Kai climbed to his feet and looked at the grey wasteland stretching endlessly around him. Somewhere in this desolate dimension, there had to be others. There had to be a way out. And the System—broken, glitchy, and sarcastic as it was—was going to help him find it.

"Dimension Zero," he said to the empty wasteland. "They threw me away thinking I'd die. They were wrong about that. They're going to be wrong about a lot of things."

He picked a direction and started walking. Behind him, the System's interface flickered briefly, and for just an instant, the text resolved into something different—something older, in a language that predated human writing. Then it glitched back to normal, and the moment passed.

Kai didn't notice. He was too busy surviving.
