**ECHOES OF THE HOLLOW**
**Chapter — The Room That Remembered Them**
Sonya woke to the sound of rain that was not quite rain.
It struck the window in the correct rhythm, but the drops arrived a half-beat late, as if the weather had to remember how water was supposed to fall. She lay still and counted. One. Two. Three. The room smelled of damp plaster and the cheap lemon soap Ray bought in bulk. On four the pane shivered, and a pale rectangle of light bloomed at the foot of the bed, humming the way a refrigerator hums when no one is listening.

The text hung in the air like breath on glass. No one had taught her to read System windows. They had simply begun appearing three nights ago, after she and Ray moved into the Hollow—the old brick walk-up on Marrow Street that the listing had called "quietly charming" and the neighbors called nothing at all.
