Chapter 5 - CHAPTER FIVE: The Test Begins

I didn't trust the silence anymore.

Not in this house.

Not after yesterday.

Every corner felt like it had eyes. Every sound felt intentional. Even the air felt… controlled.

And I hated that I was starting to notice it.

Rico Zander had left early that morning without a word.

No explanation.

No goodbye.

Not that I expected one.

Still, the emptiness he left behind felt deliberate—like even his absence had a purpose.

I was beginning to understand something slowly.

Nothing around him was accidental.

Not even me.

"Madam," a maid called softly from the hallway.

I turned. "Yes?"

"Master Rico said you should prepare. He wants you to accompany him somewhere."

I frowned immediately.

"Where?"

The maid hesitated. "He didn't say."

Of course he didn't.

Twenty minutes later, I was in a car beside him.

Silence again.

It was always silence with Rico.

But today… it felt different.

He wasn't ignoring me.

He was observing me.

I could feel it.

"You don't talk much, do you?" I finally asked.

He didn't look at me.

"I talk when it matters."

I scoffed lightly. "And when does it matter to you?"

A pause.

Then—

"When I'm testing something."

My eyes narrowed. "Something?"

That was all I got.

No explanation.

Just a calm, unreadable expression.

The car stopped in front of a large private estate.

I looked out the window.

"Whose place is this?"

Rico finally turned to me.

"You'll see."

That was never a good answer.

We entered the estate.

It was quieter than his house. Too clean. Too still.

And then I saw them.

Three men standing near the entrance.

All dressed in black.

All watching me.

My body instinctively tensed.

Rico noticed.

Of course he did.

"This is unnecessary," I said immediately.

Rico walked ahead, not even slowing down.

"Walk," he ordered calmly.

I didn't move.

He stopped.

Slowly turned.

And looked at me like he was waiting.

Testing.

Always testing.

"I said I'm not a prisoner," I reminded him sharply.

He stepped closer.

"And I didn't say you were."

Silence.

Heavy.

Pressing.

Then he said something that changed everything.

"Walk past them."

I frowned. "Why?"

"Because I want to see what you do when you feel threatened."

My chest tightened.

"This is some kind of joke to you?"

"No," he replied calmly.

"This is information."

Information.

That word felt colder than the air around us.

The men ahead shifted slightly. Watching. Waiting. Like they were part of this experiment.

My instincts screamed at me.

Run.

Don't trust this.

Don't move.

But I hated being controlled.

So I stepped forward.

One step.

Then another.

I could feel their eyes on me like knives.

But I didn't stop.

As I passed them, one of the men stepped slightly into my path.

My heart jumped—but I didn't step back.

I held my ground.

Hard stare.

Straight posture.

No fear.

Behind me, I heard Rico's voice.

"Interesting."

Just one word.

But it carried weight.

The man moved aside.

I walked past all three without breaking eye contact.

Only when I reached Rico did I finally speak.

"You're insane," I said quietly.

He studied me for a moment.

Then—

"No," he replied.

"You're just not afraid the way I expected."

A pause.

Then he added—

"That changes things."

My stomach tightened.

"What things?"

But he had already turned away.

Leaving me with no answer.

Only questions.

And one unsettling truth forming in my mind.

This wasn't a marriage.

It wasn't even a trap anymore.

It was a test.

And I had just passed… or failed… depending on what he truly wanted
