Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: Shadows

The Gu family meeting hall smelled of sandalwood and disappointment.

Ye Xuan stood at the back, watching his "father" patriarch Gu Tianxiong deliver the speech that should have happened twenty chapters from now. In the original novel, this scene was two paragraphs long. Gu Chen, already disowned, watched from the shadows as his eldest brother inherited everything.

But here, now, Ye Xuan was still officially the third son, still had a seat at the table, still had a chance.

"...therefore, given Gu Chen's repeated failures to manifest even basic spiritual sensitivity," Gu Tianxiong was saying, his voice carrying that particular tone of noble disappointment Ye Xuan had read described dozens of times, "the council has recommended—"

"Father." Ye Xuan's voice cut through the hall.

Silence. Twenty pairs of eyes turned to him, his eldest brother, Gu Lie, smirked, and his second brother, Gu Wen, looked worried. Gu Wen had always been the "nice one" in the novel, dead by Chapter 200 protecting the protagonist.

"Gu Chen." Gu Tianxiong's tone was ice. "You interrupt a formal proceeding?"

"I interrupted a mistake." Ye Xuan walked forward. His cultivation was still pitiful, Mortal 3, barely able to sense the spiritual energy that filled this room like water filled an ocean. But he had something else. "You wish to disinherit me because I cannot cultivate, but what if I told you that I chose not to cultivate?"

Gu Lie laughed. "Chosen? You? You can't even—"

"Silence." Gu Tianxiong held up a hand, but his eyes were on Ye Xuan. "Explain."

Ye Xuan reached into his robe and withdrew the Shadow Meridian manual. He'd spent all night studying it, cross-referencing with his knowledge of the novel's lore. It was real, powerful, and perfectly designed for someone who needed to hide their growth.

"This is the Shadow Meridian Technique," he said. "Sealed by the first patriarch and misunderstood by every generation since, it requires no spiritual root, it requires no talent, it requires only patience."

He activated the technique, just the first layer, barely a whisper of power, but in the hall's dim corners, shadows seemed to reach toward him, and the temperature dropped.

Gu Tianxiong stood up. "Impossible, that manual is trash, every expert who examined it—"

"Examined it in sunlight," Ye Xuan finished. "With spiritual sense, the technique was designed to be invisible to conventional detection. That's the point. The Gu family was meant to be the shadow guardians of the Azure Cloud Kingdom, we forgot, but I remembered."

It was a lie and truth mixed together. The technique was real. The "guardian" history was something Ye Xuan had invented based on novel lore, but it sounded right.

And that was the key. In this world, appearances were everything.

Ye Xuan ignored the system warning and pressed his advantage. "Give me three months, Father. Three months until the Academy entrance exam, if I haven't reached Spirit Realm by then, disinherit me publicly, I'll leave without protest, but if I succeed..." He looked at Gu Lie, whose smirk had vanished. "I want the family sword, and I want the truth about Mother's death."

The hall exploded into whispers. Lady Gu's death, Gu Chen's mother, had been ruled an accident. But Ye Xuan knew, from the novel's later chapters, that she had been murdered by Gu Lie's own mother, the current Lady Gu.

He had just made an enemy for life, but he had also bought himself time.

Gu Tianxiong stared at him for a long moment. Then: "Three months, the sword is yours if you succeed, and as for the rest..." He sat down. "We will speak of your mother when you earn the right."

Ye Xuan bowed, hiding his smile. Chapter 47 was 89 days away. He had just secured resources, protection, and a training montage sequence.

Now he just had to survive whatever "Narrative Correction" the system had warned him about.

As the meeting broke up, a servant girl bumped into him in the corridor, she whispered, "Message from Cao Lao. Tonight, the catacombs, come alone."

Then she was gone, and Ye Xuan was left wondering if she had been a real person or the world's first attempt to lure him back to the script.

He had to be careful, but he couldn't stop.
