Chapter 3 - The Ones Who Watch

The rain faded into the background.

Not because it stopped—

But because everything else felt louder.

---

Arin's shoes dragged slightly against the wet floor as he was pulled through the corridor.

The two students holding him weren't rough, but they didn't loosen their grip either.

Firm. Controlled.

Like they had done this before.

---

The hallway was different from the courtyard.

Quieter.

Too quiet.

---

Most classrooms were closed.

Lights flickered overhead.

The walls were marked—scratches, dents, even dried stains that no one bothered to clean.

---

Arin's breathing had steadied a little, but his body still ached.

Every step reminded him of the hits he took.

---

Where are they taking me…?

---

He glanced at the two students beside him.

"…Who was that guy?"

No response.

---

"…The one who stopped the fight."

---

The one on his right finally spoke.

"…You don't need to know."

---

His tone wasn't rude.

It was empty.

---

That answer made things worse.

---

They reached the end of the hallway.

A stairwell.

---

Instead of going down—

They went up.

---

Rooftop…?

---

Arin's chest tightened.

---

The sound of the door creaking open echoed as they pushed it.

---

Cold air hit his face.

---

The rooftop was wide.

Open.

Surrounded by tall metal fencing.

---

And there—

Three figures stood waiting.

---

The one from before was in the center.

Calm.

Still.

Watching.

---

The other two stood slightly behind him.

One leaned against the fence, arms crossed, expression bored.

The other sat on a low ledge, quietly observing.

---

Arin was brought forward.

Then released.

---

His legs almost gave out—but he forced himself to stand.

---

Silence settled.

---

The central figure stepped closer.

Slow.

Measured.

---

Up close—

His presence felt heavier.

---

Not because of size.

Not because of aggression.

---

But because of control.

---

"…Arin Kurose," he said.

---

Arin froze.

"…How do you—"

---

"You're a transfer student. First day."

---

A pause.

---

"You have no record of fighting."

---

Another step closer.

---

"And yet… you adapted mid-combat."

---

Arin said nothing.

---

The man's eyes narrowed slightly.

---

"…Look at me."

---

Arin hesitated—

Then did.

---

For a moment—

It felt like he was being dissected.

---

Analyzed.

---

Not as a person.

---

But as something else.

---

"…Interesting," the man repeated.

---

The one leaning on the fence sighed.

"Can we skip the staring part? Either he's useful or he's not."

---

The seated one spoke calmly.

"Let him finish."

---

The central figure didn't react to either of them.

His attention remained on Arin.

---

"…Do you understand where you are?" he asked.

---

Arin swallowed.

"…A school."

---

A faint pause.

---

Then—

A small exhale.

---

Not quite a laugh.

---

"…No."

---

The man turned slightly, gesturing toward the city beyond the fence.

---

"This is a controlled zone."

---

Arin frowned.

"…What?"

---

"Kurogane High is not independent," he continued. "It is one of many sectors."

---

"Each sector is monitored."

---

"Tested."

---

"Maintained."

---

Arin's mind struggled to keep up.

"…Tested… for what?"

---

The man's gaze returned to him.

---

"For potential."

---

Silence.

---

The word hung in the air.

---

Arin felt something cold settle in his chest.

---

"…You mean… the fights?"

---

"They are not random."

---

A step closer.

---

"They are evaluation."

---

Arin's fingers tightened.

---

"…That's insane."

---

The one on the fence chuckled.

"Yeah, we all said that at first."

---

The seated one added quietly,

"Then we stopped saying it."

---

The central figure continued.

---

"Those who show nothing… are ignored."

---

"Those who show resistance… are used."

---

A pause.

---

"Those who evolve…"

---

His eyes sharpened.

---

"…are taken."

---

Arin's breath hitched.

---

"…Taken where?"

---

No answer.

---

Not immediately.

---

Instead—

The man turned away slightly.

---

"…Your reaction speed increased after initial contact."

---

"You adjusted to rhythm."

---

"You observed patterns unconsciously."

---

Another pause.

---

"…That is not normal."

---

Arin felt it again.

That same thing from before.

Deep inside.

---

Unfamiliar.

---

"…I didn't do anything," Arin said quietly.

---

"That is incorrect."

---

The response came instantly.

---

"You just don't understand what you did."

---

Silence.

---

Wind passed through the rooftop.

---

Cold.

Sharp.

---

"…So what now?" Arin asked.

---

The man looked at him one last time.

---

"…Now you decide."

---

Arin blinked.

"…Decide?"

---

"You've been noticed."

---

A simple statement.

But heavy.

---

"You can return to being irrelevant."

---

The one at the fence smirked.

"Not likely."

---

"…Or," the man continued,

"You can step forward."

---

Arin's chest tightened.

---

"…And if I don't?"

---

The answer came from the seated one this time.

---

"Then someone stronger will break you eventually."

---

No emotion.

Just fact.

---

Arin looked between them.

---

None of them were joking.

---

None of them cared what he chose.

---

That was the worst part.

---

This wasn't recruitment.

---

This was selection.

---

No way out…

---

The thought returned.

---

Stronger this time.

---

Arin looked down at his hands.

---

They were still shaking.

---

From pain.

From adrenaline.

From something else.

---

I can't go back…

---

Not after this.

---

Not after being seen.

---

Slowly—

He lifted his head.

---

"…If I step forward…"

---

The man waited.

---

"…what happens?"

---

A brief pause.

---

Then—

---

"You learn."

---

"Or you disappear."

---

Silence.

---

Arin let out a slow breath.

---

His mind was still racing.

But one thing became clear.

---

This wasn't about winning.

---

It wasn't about fighting.

---

It was about surviving something much bigger than him.

---

And if he stayed the same—

---

He would be crushed.

---

"…Fine."

---

The word left his mouth before he could stop it.

---

"…I'll step forward."

---

The air shifted.

---

The one at the fence smiled.

"Thought so."

---

The seated one nodded slightly.

---

The central figure turned fully.

---

"…Then you begin today."

---

Arin's eyes narrowed.

"…Begin what?"

---

A short pause.

---

"…Understanding this place."

---

The man started walking toward the stair door.

---

"Follow."

---

Arin hesitated—

Then moved.

---

Each step felt heavier than the last.

---

As if he was walking deeper into something he didn't understand.

---

Something dangerous.

---

The door opened.

Darkness waited inside.

---

And without realizing it—

---

Arin stepped into it.
