Chapter 34 - The Sky's Verdict

The bright sky moments ago took a turn.

Dark clouds formed at an unnatural speed.

The tiger stared at the hornbill more intensely.

The hornbill stared back with a hint of confusion.

Both knew immediately that this was outside the influence of either of them.

Their attention shifted toward the unconscious human.

The hornbill controlled its bloodlust and began calculating once more.

If the human was still alive, things were going to change.

Then suddenly—

Life force erupted from the human at a frightening rate.

A paralyzing fear overtook the hornbill.

It knew only two ways to recover energy.

By directly consuming asura energy.

Or by feeding upon the creatures of nature and drawing from the world itself, a slow process requiring time.

The human was doing neither.

The energy flooding into him came from somewhere else.

Not from his body.

Not from the surrounding world.

Somewhere deeper.

Somewhere the hornbill could neither see nor understand.

And worse—

The energy now filling the human felt far more powerful than before.

Only one option remained.

Retreat.

With the tiger still standing there, reaching the human before he awakened was impossible.

The risk was no longer worth it.

The hornbill turned.

Its wings spread.

Preparing to leave.

I slowly opened my eyes.

For a few seconds, I simply stared upward.

Rain touched my face.

Cold.

Real.

The sensation felt distant at first.

Like my body belonged to someone else.

Small droplets landed in my eyes.

Then the drizzle became heavier.

Rain poured from the dark sky.

I blinked.

Then slowly sat up.

The memory returned immediately.

The black sphere.

The explosion.

The pain.

My hand shot toward my stomach.

I froze.

The wound was gone.

Not healed.

Gone.

The flesh felt whole beneath my fingers.

No scar.

No torn skin.

Nothing.

Only a dull ache remained deep inside my body.

A reminder that the injury had been real.

"What..."

The word escaped quietly.

Something moved beneath my skin.

I frowned.

An unfamiliar presence drifted through my body in slow currents.

It felt strangely powerful.

Not aggressive.

Not overwhelming.

Just... vast.

The sensation was difficult to describe.

At first, I assumed it was simply repairing the damage.

But the more I observed it, the less sense it made.

The energy didn't feel like life force.

It wasn't Atma.

And it definitely wasn't asura energy.

I had no reference for what it was.

The unfamiliar presence continued moving through my body.

Then, gradually, it began to change.

Not because I guided it.

Not because it absorbed something.

The transformation simply happened.

The unfamiliar presence slowly became familiar.

Piece by piece.

Its structure shifted.

Its nature altered.

Until eventually...

It felt exactly like my own Atma.

I frowned.

That shouldn't have been possible.

Energy didn't simply become another type of energy.

At least, I was fairly certain it didn't.

Yet that was exactly what I was witnessing.

The process continued effortlessly.

As though it had always possessed the ability to become anything.

I stared at it for several moments.

Then gave up trying to understand.

There were significantly more immediate problems to worry about.

My senses expanded instinctively.

Immediately, I found the tiger.

And the hornbill.

Neither had moved.

Some kind of standoff.

Were they fighting?

Before I could properly process the situation, the hornbill turned away.

Its powerful wings beat against the rain.

It was leaving.

A chill ran through me.

No.

Absolutely not.

If it escaped now...

Everything that happened today would happen again.

I pushed myself upright.

Pain shot through my body.

I ignored it.

My eyes locked onto the retreating hornbill.

Then—

The world disappeared beneath white.

Not light.

Something far more violent.

A pillar of raging energy thicker than a tree trunk descended from the heavens.

The bolt struck the hornbill directly across its back.

For an instant the entire forest became white.

Then came the sound.

Not a crack.

Not thunder.

A detonation.

The air itself seemed to tear apart.

My vision blurred beneath dancing afterimages.

When it finally cleared, I saw the hornbill tumbling from the sky.

Crashing into the earth below.

I stared.

"..."

Rain hammered against my face.

My heart pounded.

The thought appeared immediately.

I crushed it just as quickly.

No.

There was absolutely no way.

The hornbill staggered back to its feet.

Somehow alive.

The thing had just been struck by one of the largest lightning bolts I could remember seeing.

And it was still moving.

Beside me, the tiger was already in motion.

No hesitation.

No confusion.

Unlike me, it didn't care why the opportunity existed.

Only that it did.

Right.

Questions later.

Kill the annoying scout first.

The hornbill was already recovering.

The tiger wouldn't reach it in time.

Neither would I.

I looked upward.

Toward the storm.

Toward the dark clouds gathering above.

And for the first time, I truly felt them.

Not with my eyes.

Not with my ears.

With something deeper.

The clouds pulsed.

Power moved through them.

Ancient.

Violent.

Alive.

A strange sensation washed through me.

Not control.

Not ownership.

Recognition.

As though something vast had acknowledged my existence.

Waiting.

Watching.

A mad grin spread across my face.

Tiger-san launched himself into the air.

The leap was monstrous.

His claws barely missed the hornbill as it struggled to regain altitude.

Lightning flashed overhead.

For a brief moment, the tiger looked less like a predator and more like a creature from myth hunting a demon through the storm.

Water exploded outward as he landed.

Then the sky flashed again.

A second bolt descended.

Then another.

The hornbill screamed.

Both strikes slammed into its body and hurled it back toward the crater.

Broken earth collapsed beneath the impact.

The creature rolled through mud, stone, and rainwater before finally coming to a stop.

Directly in front of the tiger.

This time it did not rise immediately.

The tiger approached.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

The hornbill tried anyway.

One final attempt.

One final struggle.

Its body twitched.

Wings spread.

The tiger's jaws closed around its neck.

The great asura hornbill erupted into desperate movement.

Clawing.

Thrashing.

Twisting.

Fighting.

The tiger held firm.

Muscles rippled beneath rain-soaked fur as the predator tightened its grip.

Patient.

Relentless.

Emerald flames spread through the hornbill's body.

The struggle weakened.

Then weakened further.

Until only silence remained.

The tiger stood over its prey.

Watching.

The hornbill slowly came undone.

Black feathers dissolved.

Corrupted flesh followed.

Until nothing remained except drifting dust carried away by the rain.

Silence returned to the crater.

I released a slow breath.

For the first time since arriving in this world, I genuinely thought I had died.

Maybe I had.

Maybe part of me actually had.

I looked toward the dark sky one final time.

The storm was already beginning to calm.

No answers came.

Only rain.

"...yeah."

That felt about right.

I spread my senses to the north where the asuras came and I felt it.

Some strong.

Some weak.

Enough to recover.

Enough to move forward.

But not today.

Today, surviving was enough.

I looked toward the tiger.

The tiger looked back.

Then immediately ignored me.

Fair.

"Let's get out of here."

The rain continued falling as we left the crater behind.

And for the first time in a very long while—

The forest felt quiet.
