The asura energy raging within me was… different.
Fiercer.
Unlike the bipedal beasts I had absorbed before, this felt purer—denser, more refined. It wasn't just energy.
It had a will.
I could feel it resisting, pushing back against my soul, trying to spread—trying to take control.
But in the end…
It burned.
Just the same.
My atma devoured it, feeding on it, converting it into something that filled every corner of my body with an ancient, relentless strength.
For a fleeting moment, I felt invincible.
As if a blade through my heart wouldn't be enough to bring me down.
The limits of being human…
They were slipping away.
Slowly.
On the other side of the scorched battlefield, the tiger remained standing.
Barely.
Its massive frame trembled under its own weight, breath heavy, body battered—but there was no mistaking it.
Pride.
Unyielding.
An apex predator to the very end.
Its eyes locked onto mine.
Sharp. Calculating.
We stood there in silence.
Neither of us willing to make the first move.
Then—
I felt them.
More.
Dozens… no—
More than that.
Presences closing in from all directions, each one carrying that same twisted, suffocating asura energy.
Even in my current state, the sheer number sent a chill through me.
Run.
The thought was immediate.
Our battle had drawn too much attention.
Staying here would be suicide.
And yet—
A strange unease tugged at me.
The tiger.
For some reason, I didn't want to leave it behind.
But time wasn't on my side.
I slowly stepped back, keeping my eyes on it, making my intent clear.
No fight.
Not now.
The tiger didn't pursue.
It simply watched.
Then, without warning, it turned—and disappeared into the depths of the jungle.
Gone.
Just like that.
I didn't wait.
Turning away, I focused on the shifting field of energies around me, searching for the thinnest concentration—the weakest direction.
That was my path.
I considered suppressing my energy again, but the asura force within me was still volatile. If I pushed it too far, I risked losing control entirely.
No.
Speed was safer.
For now.
I moved.
The world blurred.
I leapt across steep inclines, scaling near-vertical terrain with inhuman ease. Within moments, I had climbed high enough to glimpse the vast forest behind me stretching endlessly beneath the night sky, stars flickering faintly above.
And then—
I encountered them.
The asura-born creatures rushing toward the battlefield.
I tensed, ready to strike first—end it quickly before they could react.
But—
They didn't attack.
Before we even came face to face, they changed direction.
Avoiding me.
Circling wide.
Still heading toward the site of the clash.
I slowed slightly, confusion flickering through my mind.
What…?
Were they—
Scared?
The thought surfaced—and vanished just as quickly.
Doesn't matter.
I didn't stop.
I pushed forward, putting as much distance between myself and that battlefield as possible.
The forest began to thin.
The terrain shifted into a steep climb, jagged and unforgiving.
A mountain.
Without hesitation, I ascended.
My body moved with unnatural speed, muscles responding without strain, carrying me upward until—
At last—
I reached the peak.
I stopped.
Silence.
No hostile presence nearby.
No twisted energies pressing in.
For the first time since this began…
I could breathe.
From this height, the forest stretched endlessly in every direction, a dark ocean beneath the faint glow of the stars. I couldn't see everything clearly—but it was enough.
Enough to plan.
Enough to survive.
"I'll move at first light," I murmured.
For now—
Rest.
I sat down on a cluster of cold rocks, my body finally beginning to register the toll of everything I had endured.
My thoughts drifted.
To the tiger.
It was the first living being I had seen in this place that wasn't consumed by asura energy.
A strange existence.
Like it belonged to something older.
Something… balanced.
I exhaled slowly.
Then turned inward.
The asura energy within me was still there—rampant, restless.
Last time, I hadn't had the chance to observe it properly.
Now, I would.
I closed my eyes and focused.
I watched as my soul—my atma—pulled the energy inward, feeding on it, burning it away at its core. Each pulse made it brighter, fiercer.
Stronger.
But the asura energy resisted.
It ignored my attempts to control it, thrashing wildly, trying to break free from my body.
So—
I let it.
Just a little.
A thin stream slipped out.
The moment it left me, it didn't disperse.
It moved.
Flowing through the air like a dark current—almost alive.
Not random.
Directed.
I stood and walked to the edge of the mountain, releasing a bit more.
Again—
Same result.
It drifted in the same direction.
Toward something.
Towards the opposite of the battlefield, and coincidently the same direction I decided to run.
My eyes narrowed.
Was it returning?
Drawn back to its source?
Or something else entirely?
A part of me wanted to follow it.
To understand.
But—
No.
Not tonight.
That path reeked of danger.
I stepped back.
The asura energy inside me continued to burn, slower now than before. At this rate, it might last another day.
Whether that was a blessing or a curse…
I didn't know.
But I wasn't ready to let it go.
Not after everything I had risked.
I lay back against the cold stone, staring up at the faint stars above.
Just for tonight—
I would rest.
Tomorrow—
I would find a way out of this forest.
And with that thought—
Sleep took me.
