Chapter 15 - Chapter 15 – The Trial

Part I: The Witness Stand (Psychological Thriller)

Three months later. A courtroom. Fluorescent lights. Wooden benches.

Mara sat in the witness box. Her hands were steady. Cass was in the gallery, next to Simone. Elias was in the back row, crying quietly.

The prosecutor, a woman with sharp glasses, asked: "Ms. Reyes – or Mara, or Kaelen – can you describe the memory-wipe procedure?"

Mara took a breath. "It's a chemical injection. It targets the hippocampus. It doesn't just erase memories. It severs emotional connections. You forget why you loved someone. Why you hated someone. You become a blank page."

"And Dr. Aris performed this on you twelve times?"

"Yes."

"Did you consent?"

"The first time, yes. The next eleven, no. He convinced me I had consented. He wiped my memory of consenting."

The prosecutor turned to the jury. Twelve faces. Some skeptical. Some tearful.

"Dr. Aris," the prosecutor continued, "also performed this procedure on seventy-two other patients. Four died. He faces seventy-two counts of assault, four counts of manslaughter, and one count of operating an unlicensed medical facility."

Dr. Aris sat at the defense table. He looked small. Old. Beaten.

But his eyes still held that spark of amusement.

Part II: The Defense (Literary Interlude)

The defense lawyer was young, cocky, expensive. He stood up.

"Ms. Reyes, you testified that you voluntarily sought out Dr. Aris. You voluntarily paid him. You voluntarily submitted to the first wipe. Isn't that true?"

"Yes."

"And after that, you continued to return to him. Eleven more times. Isn't it possible that you wanted to forget? That Dr. Aris was simply giving you what you asked for?"

Mara looked at the lawyer. Then at Dr. Aris. Then at Cass.

"A man who sells alcohol to an alcoholic isn't a helper. He's a predator. Dr. Aris knew I was addicted to forgetting. He exploited that addiction for money. That's not medicine. That's murder of the self."

The jury shifted. The lawyer sat down.

Dr. Aris whispered something to his attorney. The attorney shook his head.

The judge called for a recess.

Part III: The Verdict (Action Seed)

Two days later, the jury returned.

Mara held Cass's hand so hard her knuckles went white.

The foreman stood. "On the count of assault against Mara Reyes, we find the defendant… guilty."

Cheers from the gallery. Simone hugged Elias.

"On the count of manslaughter of patient John Keller… guilty."

"On the count of operating an unlicensed medical facility… guilty."

Seventy-two counts. Seventy-two guilty verdicts.

Dr. Aris showed no emotion. He simply stared at the ceiling.

The judge sentenced him to forty years. No parole.

As the bailiffs led him away, he turned to Mara. "You'll forget again," he said. "It's in your blood now. One day, you'll wake up and remember nothing. Not even my name."

Mara smiled. "Then I'll write a note. And the note will say: You won."
