Chapter 8 - Chapter Eight – The Vault

Part I: The Excavation (Psychological Thriller)

Back at the house. Simone's men were gone. She had called them off—she wanted to witness the opening herself.

Cass found the sledgehammer in the garage. Mara broke the concrete floor of the basement. Beneath it: a steel hatch. The silver key fit.

She turned it.

The hatch opened on hydraulics. A ladder led down into darkness. Cold air rose. It smelled like rust and old paper.

"I go alone," Mara said.

"No." Cass grabbed her arm. "Not alone."

"Then come."

Elias stayed above, guarding the door. Cass and Mara climbed down.

Part II: The Room of Lives (Literary Interlude)

The vault was a library. Not of books—of jars. Hundreds of glass jars on metal shelves. Each jar contained a rolled-up strip of paper. Each strip was a memory.

"This is insane," Mara whispered.

"This is you," Cass said. "Every memory you ever stole. Every life you ever lived. Every person you ever touched."

She picked up a jar. Label: Juno, age 22, first kiss.

She opened it. Unrolled the paper. It was blank.

"Paper doesn't hold memories," Cass said. "You do. These are just placeholders. The real memories are in your blood. The doctor lied."

Mara dropped the jar. It shattered.

Behind her, footsteps.

Simone stepped out from between the shelves. No red hat this time. Her face was scarred, beautiful, and furious.

"Hello, sister," Simone said. "Ready to remember?"

Part III: The Touch (Action Seed)

Simone lunged. Mara didn't dodge. She reached out and grabbed Simone's wrist.

Memories flooded in.

They were children. Building a fort. Simone was laughing. Mara was braiding her hair.

They were teenagers. Fighting over a boy. Simone pushed Mara. Mara pushed back harder. Simone fell down stairs.

They were adults. Simone was in a hospital bed. Mara was crying. A doctor said, "She'll never walk again."

Mara ran. Changed her name. Found the doctor. Invented the wipe.

Simone followed. Always followed.

Mara screamed. Let go. Fell to her knees.

"I remember," she whispered. "I remember everything."

Simone knelt in front of her. Tears cut tracks through the scars.

"Do you remember that I loved you?" Simone asked. "Even after the stairs. Even after you ran. I loved you."

Mara looked at her sister's face. The face she had broken.

"Yes," Mara said. "I remember."

Cass stood behind them. He didn't speak. He didn't move.

The vault waited in silence.
