Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: The Announcement

The electric fan hummed lazily above the classroom, barely fighting the late morning heat. Sunlight streamed through the open windows of Grade 9 – Einstein, casting long shadows across rows of worn wooden desks. The air was thick with anticipation—something every student could feel but no one dared to say out loud.

It was ranking day.

A low buzz of whispers filled the room.

"Do you think it'll change this time?"

"No way. It's always him."

"But Luna got really high scores this quarter…"

At the back, someone tapped their pen nervously against the desk. Others leaned forward, eyes fixed on the empty space at the front wall where the ranking sheet would soon be posted.

Near the window sat Adrian Reyes. Straight posture. Calm expression. Sharp eyes scanning his notes like nothing unusual was about to happen. To anyone watching, he looked completely unaffected. But beneath the surface, his fingers paused ever so slightly on the page. Just for a second. Then he continued reading.

Across the room, seated two rows ahead, was Luna Valdez.

Unlike Adrian, she wasn't pretending to study. Her notebook was open, but her eyes were fixed on the classroom door. Waiting. Her foot tapped lightly against the floor—rhythmic, controlled, but enough to reveal the tension she tried to hide.

She inhaled slowly. This is it. The door suddenly creaked open.

The entire room fell silent. Their adviser walked in, carrying a folder—the folder.

Every head turned.

Even Adrian stopped reading.

Even Luna stopped breathing.

Without a word, the teacher walked to the front, pulled out a sheet of paper, and began pinning it onto the bulletin board.

The sound of the thumbtacks clicking into place echoed louder than it should have. Click. Click. Click.

"Alright," the teacher said, turning around. "Your rankings for this quarter." That was all it took. Chairs scraped loudly against the floor as students rushed forward in a chaotic wave. Voices overlapped, names were called out, reactions exploded.

"I got 10th!"

"Wait—where am I?!"

"No way, I dropped?!"

But two students didn't move immediately. Adrian stood up slowly. Luna followed a second later. They didn't rush. They walked. Step by step. As if the result would not change no matter how fast they got there. The crowd parted slightly when they approached. Not out of politeness— But expectation.

Everyone knew. This was between them. Adrian's eyes moved up the list. From bottom… to middle… to top. He didn't need to search long.

Rank 2: Luna Valdez

His gaze lifted one line higher.

Rank 1: Adrian Reyes

There it was. Unchanged. Again. A faint exhale escaped him—quiet, controlled. Almost unnoticeable. But beside him, Luna had already seen it too. Her eyes lingered on the same two names. Her name. Then his. Top 2...Again. For a moment, her expression didn't change. Then her lips pressed into a thin line.

Not anger. Not sadness. Something sharper. Determination.

Around them, whispers spread quickly.

"Still Adrian…"

"Luna's really close though…"

"She might beat him next time…"

Adrian stepped back from the board. So did Luna. And for the first time that day— They looked at each other. No smiles. No greetings. Just a quiet, intense understanding. Luna crossed her arms slightly, tilting her head just enough to meet his gaze directly.

"Enjoy it while it lasts," she said.

Her voice wasn't loud. But it cut through the noise. Adrian didn't react immediately. He simply stared at her for a second—

Then replied calmly,

"You've been saying that for a while."

A few students nearby went silent, sensing something.

Luna's eyes narrowed slightly.

"Because it's true."

Adrian adjusted his bag on his shoulder.

"Then prove it."

A pause. A challenge. Clear and undeniable. Luna took a small step closer.

"Next quarter," she said firmly, "I'll be Rank 1."

Adrian met her gaze without hesitation.

"Try."

The word hung in the air between them. Simple. Sharp.

Final.

For a moment, neither of them moved. Then Luna turned first, walking back to her seat without another word. Adrian followed shortly after, picking up his notebook as if nothing had happened. But the classroom had changed. The whispers grew louder. The tension thicker. And the line between competition and something deeper… Had just begun to form. At the front of the room, the ranking sheet fluttered slightly in the warm breeze. Two names at the top. Close. Too close. And everyone knew— Next quarter wouldn't be the same.
