Chapter 98 - Chapter 98 — Blood Upon the Buried Heart

Heishan Rong fought the way his clan ruled: occupying space, imposing weight, and forcing others to retreat.

Every strike of his black saber compressed the air. The terrace stones broke beneath his feet, and dark qi left marks that continued corroding the rock after the blade passed. Lin Yuan could not block head-on. His partially repaired meridians could endure power, but not a prolonged succession of impacts at that level.

So he stopped fighting the saber.

He began fighting the man.

Heishan Rong loaded his right shoulder before every descending cut. He turned his left foot when preparing a sweep. He protected too much the side Lin Yuan had injured in their earlier encounter. These were small details, insufficient alone, but Lin Yuan had built a sect by learning to see hidden potential. The same sight could find flaws.

The saber descended.

Lin Yuan took half a step instead of a full one. The blade passed a finger's width from his robe. He struck the elbow joint with two knuckles and withdrew before the response.

Heishan Rong growled.

—Insect bites.

—Enough of them kill large beasts.

The man attacked with greater force. That was what Lin Yuan wanted. Anger made his movements wider and his breathing more predictable.

On the far side of the mountain, Mo Qian and Gu Tian followed a route absent from current maps. The old man had recognized an echo of qi in Yu Sen's seal and compared it to vibrations beneath the ground. They moved through a narrow conduit descending toward an abandoned chamber beyond the main perimeter.

—If I die here —Gu Tian muttered—, I will return as a ghost and hide all your shoes.

Mo Qian brushed aside a web.

—That would be greater dedication than you showed as a living elder.

—I continue holding this sect together with knowledge none of you deserve.

—At this moment Mu Qingxue is holding the heart.

—Temporarily.

—Thirty breaths became more than a hundred.

Gu Tian quickened his pace despite the exhaustion.

They found the chamber behind a false wall. Inside, the ringed elder sat before a blood mirror, accompanied by two guards. Dozens of red threads left the mirror and entered small clay figures: one represented Yu Sen, others the formation-breaking beasts, and a larger one the masked figure.

The elder looked up.

—The thief and the corpse.

Gu Tian frowned.

—I still breathe.

—From habit, not health.

The guards attacked. Mo Qian threw two knives, not at them, but at the lamps. The chamber went dark. Gu Tian struck the ground with his staff, and ancient inscriptions in the conduit answered with faint blue light.

—To your left —he said.

Mo Qian ducked. A blade passed over his head. He rolled, cut one guard's tendon, and used the man's body as a shield against the second.

Gu Tian advanced toward the mirror. The ringed elder extended a hand, and one red thread became an energy serpent.

—I know you —the enemy said—. Master Gu Tian, the formation master expelled from the Hundred Matrices Pavilion.

Mo Qian heard the name, but had no time to react.

Gu Tian did.

His expression went empty for an instant.

—That man died long ago.

—No. He merely hid on a miserable mountain hoping no one would remember his failure.

The red serpent attacked. Gu Tian raised his staff and drew an imperfect circle. The energy struck the seal and pushed him several steps. Blood appeared at the corner of his mouth.

—Break the mirror —he ordered Mo Qian.

—It has a barrier.

—Then steal the barrier.

—That means nothing.

—You are creative. Invent something.

Mo Qian saw the clay figures around the mirror. Each held part of the defense. He did not need to break it if he could change what it protected. He seized Yu Sen's figure and threw it toward the ringed elder.

The man reacted instinctively, extending a thread to recover it.

During that breath, the mirror barrier lost one layer.

Gu Tian struck.

The staff passed through the glass.

Every red thread tightened.

On the surface, the masked figure stopped in the middle of a movement. The remaining formation beasts fell into convulsions. Yu Sen opened his eyes in the isolated room and inhaled as if emerging from water.

The ringed elder screamed. The broken mirror swallowed part of his arm before exploding into fragments.

Mo Qian covered his face. Gu Tian did not do so in time. A red shard entered his chest.

—Old man.

Gu Tian looked at the wound with irritation.

—It is not the heart.

—Are you certain?

—I have had one long enough to know where it is.

The enemy elder tried to escape through a transit circle. Mo Qian threw the clay figure of the mask into the circle before him. The route overloaded. Half the man's body disappeared, and the other half fell back into the chamber.

Gu Tian leaned on his staff.

—That was unpleasant.

Mo Qian gathered the rings from the floor.

—But effective.

—Every day you resemble more closely a problem we will never manage to expel.

—That almost sounded affectionate.

On the central terrace, destruction of the mirror changed the battle.

The superior emissary's porcelain mask cracked from one eye to the jaw. Its pressure decreased. Mu Qingxue felt the weight over the network lessen and recovered control of two lost routes.

—They cut the link —she said.

Lin Yuan heard the news while avoiding another strike from Heishan Rong.

This was the moment.

He did not attempt a larger technique. He used the one he had been building since the duel began. Every strike to the joint, every deflection, every step had forced Heishan Rong to compensate with his injured side. The man's dark qi now circulated unevenly.

Lin Yuan activated the Celestial Scripture of the Primordial Bloodline in a thin thread and inserted it with his palm just beneath the armor.

He did not attack the spiritual core.

He touched the unbalanced route.

Purified qi and dark qi collided inside the same meridian.

Heishan Rong lost strength in his saber arm.

Lin Yuan seized the wrist, turned, and used the man's own weight to throw him against the steps. The saber fell.

Heishan Rong tried to rise. Lin Yuan placed one foot on his chest.

—Your clan believes strength names everything —he said—. Then remember who allowed you to live.

He could kill him. Part of the sect expected it. Han Yue, covered in minor burns, watched from the edge. Jian Mu remained still with blood on his sword.

Lin Yuan did not lower his hand.

—Return with your people. If you cross this mountain again for greed, there will be no third defeat.

Heishan Rong looked at him with hatred and shame.

—You think this ends with me.

—No. That is why I will not waste time pretending you are the true enemy.

The words struck harder than the palm.

Lin Yuan removed his foot.

The Heishan men saw their commander fall and began to retreat. Grey Cloud auxiliaries, already disorganized by the defeat of their teams and the collapse of the superior link, hesitated.

The masked figure finally advanced.

Though weakened, its presence remained the greatest threat on the field. The crack in the mask revealed something beneath that did not resemble skin, but condensed red light.

—Mercy is a disease of the weak —it said.

Lin Yuan picked up Heishan Rong's saber and threw it away.

—That was not mercy. It was priority.

The eye-covered staff rose.

Mu Qingxue appeared on the terrace beside Lin Yuan. She had left the control room after stabilizing the heart. Blood covered her fingers from breaking plates with her hands.

—The network can give you one strike —she said—. Only one.

—Afterward?

—A third of the formation becomes unusable.

—Can we rebuild it?

—Yes.

Lin Yuan looked across the mountain. Damaged buildings, exhausted disciples, wounded being carried away. The formation was valuable, but not more valuable than the people who still depended on it.

—Do it.

Mu Qingxue placed one hand against his back.

The connection was neither intimate nor gentle. It was a brutal current. The qi of the mountain entered Lin Yuan through routes she controlled. His meridians screamed. The containment seal broke completely.

The system released warnings he ignored.

Meridian overload.

Risk of cultivation regression.

Risk of permanent damage.

The masked figure threw the staff.

The carved eyes projected a red spear aimed at Lin Yuan's chest.

He raised both hands and condensed the mountain's qi through the fragment of the Celestial Scripture. The Firmament-Sealed Medallion reacted beneath his robe, not revealing itself, but adding ancient resonance to the strike.

Gold against red.

The two forces collided above the terrace.

The sky darkened for one breath.

Mu Qingxue kept her hand against his back even as the discharge opened wounds on her arms. Han Yue drove his spear into the ground to avoid being thrown. Jian Mu protected nearby disciples with sword intent. Su Wan raised ice above the infirmary. Bai Lian covered Yu Sen with her own body.

The golden strike advanced.

The red spear cracked.

The porcelain mask exploded.

The figure beneath had no face. It was a projection of light held together by symbols. For an instant, Lin Yuan saw real eyes far away, observing him from another place.

—Heir —the voice whispered—. The Eclipse does not forget.

—Neither do I —Lin Yuan answered.

The projection dissolved.

The resulting wave swept the terrace and extinguished hundreds of defensive symbols. Lin Yuan fell to his knees. Mu Qingxue caught him before he hit the ground.

Around them, the attackers began to flee.

No victory cry rose.

There was only the sound of the mountain breathing after nearly breaking.

Lin Yuan tried to stand.

His legs did not answer.

Mu Qingxue tightened one arm around him.

—This time you will not argue.

—There are still enemies.

—They are fleeing.

—Gu Tian...

The communication plate crackled. Mo Qian's voice arrived from below.

—We found the controller. He is dead. Gu Tian is injured and refuses to admit it is serious.

—It is not serious —the old man could be heard saying in the background.

Bai Lian answered from the infirmary.

—Bring him here. I will decide that.

For the first time since the war began, someone truly laughed.

Lin Yuan closed his eyes for one moment.

They had won.

But when the system displayed the provisional balance, the word victory did not appear.

Another word did.

Evaluation pending.

Because a sect was not measured only by the enemies it expelled.

It was also measured by what remained of it when silence returned.
