Chapter 1 - CHAPTER 1 — “Marked”

Rain tapped against metal.

Soft.Steady.

Not enough to stop the city—just enough to sit on it.

Noah Vire stepped out of the hospital.

The doors slid shut behind him.

Quiet.

Inside—

machines kept her breathing.

Outside—

the city didn't notice.

He stood there for a moment.

Didn't move.

Didn't rush.

Then exhaled.

Slow.

Controlled.

And walked.

Virex City moved around him.

Trains rattled overhead.Neon signs flickered between ads and static.Voices blurred into one continuous noise.

No one stayed still.

No one looked long.

Noah passed through it untouched.

Like he didn't belong to any of it.

A siren sounded somewhere ahead.

Routine.

No one reacted.

Up the street—

a crowd had gathered.

The gate.

Behind it—

The Black Spire.

It didn't shine.

Didn't reflect.

It just stood there—

black steel rising into the sky.

Too smooth.Too still.

Like the city had grown around it…

not the other way around.

"…another team didn't come back."

The voice was low.

Almost swallowed by the rain.

A pause.

Then movement again.

Noah didn't stop.

He never did.

People go in.

Some come back.

Some don't.

That was enough for everyone else.

Noah kept walking.

His fingers tightened slightly in his pocket.

Just for a second.

Then relaxed.

Control.

Always control.

The memory came anyway.

A hospital room.

Dim lights.

Machines humming.

His sister lay still.

Too still.

Her breathing was shallow.

Like it had to be reminded.

"…did you go today?"

Her voice barely carried.

Still trying to sound normal.

"…No."

"You should."

A pause.

Her hand shifted.

Barely.

"You're the only one left."

The words stayed.

Heavy.

Their parents—

gone.

The day the Spire awakened in their district—

there wasn't an explosion.

No warning.

People went in—

and didn't come back.

His parents were among them.

No bodies.

No answers.

Just… gone.

The machine beside her beeped.

Steady.

For now.

"You said… there's a wish at the top."

Noah's gaze lowered slightly.

"…That's what they say."

She nodded.

Slow.

"Then go."

A breath.

"…bring them back."

Silence.

The memory faded.

Noah walked.

This time—

toward something.

Then—

he slowed.

Something shifted.

Not around him.

Inside his focus.

Then—

[USER RECOGNIZED]

No sound.

The city didn't change.

Only that.

Clear.

Still.

Noah stopped.

People brushed past him.

Didn't notice.

[SPINE LINK ESTABLISHED]

The words stayed in place.

Unmoving.

[INITIALIZATION COMPLETE]

A pause—

Then—

NAME: NOAH VIRESTATUS: UNREGISTEREDRANK: —

The last line appeared slowly.

ESSENCE: DETECTING…

A flicker.

ESSENCE: CONTROL

Noah didn't react.

Didn't panic.

He read.

That was all.

The display shifted.

[SELECTION CONFIRMED]

Then—

Gone.

Like it had never been there.

Noah stood still for a second longer.

Then moved.

Same pace.

Same posture.

But now—

something had changed.

And he knew it.

The academy came into view.

ASCENT PREPARATORY INSTITUTE

Steel. Concrete. Glass.

Students gathered outside.

Some talking. Some quiet. Some pretending not to care.

Noah walked past them.

At the entrance—

a scanner.

A pause.

Then—

[USER VERIFIED]

A quiet click.

The doors unlocked.

No questions.

No hesitation.

Noah stepped inside.

The doors shut behind him.

Too loud.

Conversations didn't stop.

No one slowed down.

Noah did.

Just for a second.

The weight settled in—

expectations, pressure, everything waiting ahead.

He exhaled.

Then—

He moved.

The main hall opened wide.

Cold.

Organized.

A massive screen lit the space.

Names scrolling.

Ranks beside them.

At the front—

an instructor stood.

Still.

Watching everything.

"You are not here to learn."

Silence spread.

"You are here because you were chosen."

A shift in the room.

Small.

But real.

"The Spire does not choose often."

A step forward.

"When it does—"

A pause.

"It expects results."

The screen changed.

Names locked into place.

Assignments.

Tiers.

Noah's name appeared.

NOAH VIRETier: 5

Lowest.

A few glances.

Quick.

Then gone.

Noah didn't react.

Tier didn't matter.

Not the people.

Not the academy.

Only one thing did.

The Spire.

The top.

The wish.

He lifted his eyes.

Calm.

Steady.

Controlled.

But now—

he wasn't just walking toward it.

It had already chosen him.
