Chapter 87 - Samurai Ben, Ninja Gwen, Rurouni Klein

Chapter 87: Samurai Ben, Ninja Gwen, Rurouni Klein

The digital arena pulsed with pixelated energy as a relentless tide of Sumo Robots closed in on Ben. His virtual samurai armor clanked heavily with every desperate swing of his wooden sword, but the sheer numbers were overwhelming. He was losing ground, his digital stamina bar flashing a dangerous red.

A hulking mechanical wrestler flanked him, its massive metallic hands raised for a crushing double-axe handle strike. Ben caught the shadow looming over him out of the corner of his eye. His breath hitched. He tried to pivot, but his avatar's sluggish animation lock left him wide open.

Just as the massive fists descended, a sharp whistling sound tore through the simulated air.

A massive, razor-sharp shuriken spun into view, slicing cleanly through the Sumo Robot's thick waist. The machine froze, pixelated sparks erupting from its midsection before its top half slid off and vanished into a burst of digital coins.

The giant throwing star did not stop. It arced gracefully through the air like a boomerang, snapping right back to its owner.

Ben traced its flight path. Gwen stood atop a nearby stone pillar, clad in sleek ninja garb. She casually raised one hand, catching the spinning weapon by its central ring without even blinking.

Ben swallowed hard. He absolutely refused to admit how incredibly cool that looked. He crossed his arms, puffing out his chest. "Tch. A true Sumo Slammer would have taken out ten of them with one move!"

Gwen rolled her eyes behind her ninja mask. She did not even bother arguing, simply turning her head to ignore the Dweeb entirely. As she scanned the digital horizon, a glowing yellow circular platform caught her attention. It hovered just above the ground at the edge of the arena.

"There!" Gwen pointed a slender finger. "That is a transport buoy. We need to use it to reach the next level!"

"I knew that!" Ben shouted, scrambling to keep up as Gwen leaped gracefully from her perch and sprinted toward the glowing disk.

The moment their virtual boots touched the yellow surface, the platform hummed to life. It detached from the digital earth, shooting upward through a tunnel of swirling binary code like a high-speed elevator.

When the ascent finally slowed, the platform locked into place. Ben and Gwen stepped off into a sprawling void filled with massive, floating boulders suspended in a digital sky.

This zone was entirely different. The Sumo Robots patrolling the airspace were equipped with jet thrusters on their backs and glowing red cannons built into their palms. The moment the two players rendered into the zone, the mechanical guards swiveled their heavy heads. Targeting lasers locked onto them, and the flying sumo squad immediately closed in.

A deafening roar echoed as one of the vanguard robots unleashed a massive, searing fireball straight at them.

"Move!" Gwen yelled.

They dove in opposite directions, each landing heavily on separate floating boulders just as the platform behind them exploded into a shower of red pixels.

Gwen quickly adapted, hurling a barrage of kunai to keep the airborne enemies at bay. Ben, however, was in deep trouble. His samurai class was strictly melee. Without a ranged weapon, he was reduced to a sitting duck. He gritted his teeth, his legs pumping furiously as he leaped from one floating rock to another, desperately evading the relentless artillery fire raining down around him.

But agility could only do so much against an army. The air grew thick with smoke and heat. Ben vaulted over a crumbling edge, narrowly avoiding a blast that shattered his previous foothold. He landed hard on a smaller rock, his virtual boots skidding near the edge.

Before he could even regain his balance, a jet-propelled Sumo Robot descended right in front of him. Its palm cannon glowed a blinding, furious orange.

The fireball launched. It expanded rapidly, filling Ben's entire field of vision. His avatar was completely out of stamina. He had absolutely no time to dodge.

"Watch closely," a calm, familiar voice drifted past his ear. "This is how you actually use a sword."

A gentle breeze ruffled Ben's digital hair. A sharp, metallic ring sliced through the roar of the flames.

A figure stepped effortlessly in front of him. A long, slender blade slid from its scabbard with a crisp hiss. The newcomer swung the sword in a casual, fluid arc directly into the path of the incoming inferno.

The massive fireball did not explode. It was cleanly bisected. The two halves parted like water around a stone, hurtling past them to detonate harmlessly against the floating boulders in the distance.

Ben stared wide-eyed at the back of his savior. The figure stood with relaxed posture, the gleaming sword held loosely in his right hand. A high ponytail swayed gently, and a worn, traditional long robe fluttered dramatically in the simulated wind.

The swordsman turned his head slightly, offering a dry, unimpressed look. "Dweeb. It has barely been ten minutes. How did you manage to get yourself cornered already?"

Ben's jaw dropped. "Klein?!"

Forgetting all about his tough-guy samurai persona, Ben lunged forward, throwing his arms out for a massive hug.

Klein lifted a single boot, planting it firmly against Ben's face and shoving him away with absolute disgust.

Ben rubbed his nose, looking thoroughly confused. "Wait, why are you inside the game?"

Klein lowered his leg, his tone perfectly flat. "I was sitting in the RV. I saw two player characters running around on the screen entirely on their own. It did not take a genius to figure out you two idiots got sucked into the console. So, I created a character to bail you out."

Meanwhile, back in the real world.

Klein slouched comfortably on the Rustbucket's worn sofa. A pair of high-end gaming headphones rested over his ears, and his thumbs lazily flicked across a wireless controller. He stared blankly at the glowing television screen, completely safe and entirely relaxed.

He absolutely had not entered the game world. The digital dimension was far too unpredictable, and frankly, it sounded like way too much effort. Besides, staying outside gave him administrative control. If things went terribly wrong inside the code, he could just pull the plug or hack the system from the couch.

Truth be told, he had noticed the anomaly almost immediately after it happened. The only reason it took him this long to actually intervene was that the character creation screen had far too many sliders. He had spent a solid ten minutes perfecting his avatar's cheekbones and making sure the robe had the exact right amount of dramatic wind physics.

Back in the digital void.

Klein led Ben across the floating platforms to regroup with Gwen, though it quickly became apparent she did not need any saving whatsoever.

Gwen spun gracefully through the air, hurling her massive shuriken one last time. It carved through the final jetpack-wearing Sumo Robot, reducing it to a shower of digital confetti. Landing smoothly, she finally noticed the two boys approaching.

Her eyes lit up. "Klein!"

She sprinted over and launched herself at him in a tight hug. Unlike his reaction to Ben, Klein simply stood there, letting her hug him without a single complaint or raised boot.

Ben watched this blatant display of favoritism, his eye twitching. His expression contorted into a mix of betrayal and sheer annoyance. 'Unbelievable,'Ben thought bitterly.'He wasn't disgusted by the hug. He was just disgusted by me!'

Gwen pulled back, suddenly remembering their dire situation. "Wait, Klein, can you get us out of here? We're trapped in the code!"

Klein nodded slowly, resting his sword on his shoulder. "I can pull you out whenever. But are you absolutely sure you want to leave right now? This is a fully immersive, full-dive virtual reality experience. It is a gamer's dream. Plus, with me operating from the outside, I can manipulate the game's code. Even if your hit points drop to zero, you will not actually die in the real world."

"Me! I vote we stay!" Ben practically bounced on his heels, throwing both hands in the air. "I want to keep playing! I am definitely going to smash the Dork's high score!"

Gwen crossed her arms, flashing him a highly disdainful smirk. "Keep dreaming, Dweeb. You couldn't beat my score if you had an extra set of arms."

Ben scowled, gripping his wooden katana tightly. "Oh, yeah?! Just watch me! I will show you the true power of a Sumo Slammer!"

"It seems the consensus is to proceed." Klein offered a faint, amused smile. He twirled his long sword effortlessly in his right hand, the blade catching the artificial light, before turning and strolling toward the next yellow transport platform hovering in the distance.

As they walked, Ben narrowed his eyes, studying Klein's avatar with growing suspicion. "Hey, wait a minute. Your gear looks completely different from ours."

At first glance, Klein's traditional robe appeared worn and simple. But as Ben stared, he noticed subtle, animated cloud patterns actively swirling across the fabric. It gave the garment an ethereal, hazy glow that practically screamed premium cosmetic.

Then there was the sword. It was not just shiny. A faint, pulsating silver aura clung to the edge of the blade. It hummed with a distinct particle effect that absolutely defied the game's basic lighting engine.

It did not just look like high-level gear. It looked like blatant pay-to-win nonsense.

Gwen leaned in, equally curious. "Yeah, where exactly did you get all that stuff? We just spawned with basic wooden weapons."

Klein blinked, feigning complete innocence. "What do you mean? This is just the standard starter equipment. Is there something wrong with it?"

He was lying through his teeth. Back in the RV, he had briefly transformed into Grey Matter to code a custom plug-in directly into the console's memory card. Whether in the real world or a digital one, Klein absolutely despised the concept of taking damage. If he was going to play, he was going to be an untouchable god.

Gwen shook her head, deciding not to press the issue. "Never mind. Maybe we're just overthinking it."

"Then let's go!" Ben shouted, already sprinting ahead toward the glowing yellow disk. His competitive spirit was burning too hot to care about game balance.

But just as their boots were about to touch the safe zone, the digital sky darkened.

A deafening boom shook the floating islands. A massive, heavily armored Sumo Robot—easily three times the size of the others and glowing with an ominous purple aura—crashed down from above. Its massive feet slammed directly onto the yellow platform, shattering the transport buoy into a million useless pixels.

Klein raised an eyebrow, genuinely surprised. "Fascinating. The level geometry is destructible."

"Who cares about the geometry?! Run for your lives!" Ben shrieked.

The Elite Sumo Robot raised both hands, conjuring a fireball the size of a minivan. The sheer heat radiating from it distorted the digital air. Ben did not hesitate. He took two rapid steps backward, spun on his heel, and bolted.

The three of them dove off the edge just as the colossal fireball impacted. The explosion was catastrophic, entirely vaporizing the giant rock they had been standing on a second prior. The shockwave sent them tumbling onto a lower floating island. This boss was on a completely different scale.

Finding her footing, Gwen immediately retaliated. She whipped her arm forward, sending her giant shuriken spinning toward the elite monster's neck.

But the hulking brute was unnaturally fast. It simply tilted its massive head, letting the razor-sharp weapon whiz harmlessly past its ear.

Ben groaned, gripping his useless wooden sword. "Oh, come on! It has area-of-effect damage and high evasion?! How are we even supposed to fight this thing?!"

"Like this," Klein said calmly.

He stepped forward, his grip tightening slightly on the hilt of his long sword. The faint silver aura clinging to the blade suddenly flared, erupting into a blinding, high-definition glow that completely drowned out the surrounding pixelated fire. Without breaking a single sweat, Klein raised the blade and swung it in a casual, downward diagonal slash.

A massive, crescent-shaped wave of pure silver energy erupted from the blade. It tore through the digital space faster than the eye could track, slicing through the air, the residual flames, and the Elite Sumo Robot itself.

The colossal boss froze. A blinding white line appeared down its center before the entire model split cleanly in half and violently despawned.

Ben stared at the empty space where the invincible boss had just been standing. He slowly lowered his wooden sword. The silence stretched on for a long, awkward moment.

"...Klein," Ben finally said, his voice completely deadpan. "Turn the cheats off. This is just boring now."

Klein sighed, looking entirely helpless. "I assure you, I am playing completely vanilla."

Ben and Gwen just stared at him, their expressions identical masks of pure, unadulterated skepticism.

Klein held his hands up in surrender. "Alright, alright. Fine."

Back in the RV, Klein reached over to the console and yanked the custom-built flash drive out of the memory port.

Inside the game world, the majestic, swirling clouds on Klein's robe instantly vanished, leaving behind a plain, slightly muddy texture. The blinding silver particle effect on his sword fizzled out, revealing a standard, dull iron blade.

Klein shrugged, giving his now-mediocre sword a lazy swing. "Is this better for your immersion?"

Before Ben or Gwen could answer, a deep, resonant voice echoed from the shadows behind Klein.

"Your performance just now was truly astonishing, mighty warrior."
