Chapter 6: Seizing the Kraken Eggs
Thick night fog blanketed the lake, reducing visibility to a mere handful of feet. The only source of illumination cutting through the gloom came from the bow of a small wooden rowboat. There, Klein stood perfectly still, holding up a flickering lantern with an expression of deep boredom, acting as the world's most overqualified lighthouse.
Behind him, the rhythmic splashing of oars broke the silence.
"Hoo! Hoo! Hoo! I've still got it!" Grandpa Max huffed, straining against the oars. Sweat beaded on his forehead, but he forced a grin. "Who knew rowing was this much of a workout?!"
Ben bounced on his seat, nearly tipping the small craft. "Grandpa, hurry up! If we don't move faster, Jonah Melville is going to capture the Kraken!"
"Don't underestimate your old man, Ben!" Max shot back, his pride flaring. He gripped the oars tighter, putting his back into the strokes. "I was an exceptionally excellent Plumber in my youth!"
He rowed with renewed, furious vigor, absolutely refusing to lose face in front of his grandson.
...
A short distance away, the quiet of the lake was shattered by the harsh roar of engines and the crackle of gunfire.
Jonah Melville sat securely inside the cockpit of a heavy submersible mech suit, directing a dozen armed mercenaries on the deck of a large poaching vessel. They were firing wildly into the dark water, trying to suppress the massive, thrashing tentacles of the Kraken as she repeatedly breached the surface.
Melville clearly underestimated the furious mother beast, his greed blinding him to the danger. He leaned into his comms, his voice dripping with arrogance. "Be careful with your shots! Protect those eggs, or you'll be scraping the world's most expensive omelet off the deck. Once I sell these beauties to the highest bidder, I'll be sipping cocktails in the Bahamas."
Captain Shaw's rickety boat was nowhere to be seen, presumably sunk or driven off by the heavy crossfire.
"Look over there!" Ben pointed through the fog. On the deck of the poaching vessel, a reinforced cylindrical glass container glowed faintly, housing two massive, translucent eggs. "Those have to be the Kraken's eggs. Melville stole them! No wonder she's going absolutely crazy."
Klein sighed, rolling his shoulders. He raised his left arm, hovering his right hand over the dial of his Omnitrix. "Grandpa, you guys go secure the eggs. I'll play with the locals."
He slammed his hand down.
"Articguana!"
A flash of serene, quiet blue light illuminated the fog. In Klein's place stood a large, bulky reptilian alien. His thick, powerful forelimbs gripped the wooden planks of the rowboat, and heavy gills flared along his neck—a biological adaptation that made him perfectly suited for the water. His scales were a frosty blue-white, and the Omnitrix symbol rested squarely on his chest.
Articguana opened his massive jaws, drawing in a deep breath. The air around him instantly plummeted in temperature, moisture freezing into falling snow. He exhaled.
A concentrated beam of absolute zero blasted across the water. The moment the blue-white energy struck the lake, the surface flash-froze. Articguana swept his head in a wide arc, dragging the beam over the thrashing Kraken and the massive poaching vessel. The crackle of expanding ice echoed like thunder. In the blink of an eye, the churning battlefield went dead silent, replaced by two colossal, glittering ice sculptures.
"A Polar Manzardill!" Max blurted out, his eyes widening at the sight of the alien.
Ben and Gwen snapped their heads toward him, completely lost. "Grandpa, what are you talking about?" Ben asked.
Max blinked, realizing his slip-up. He cleared his throat, adjusting his collar. "Uh, nothing! Just mumbling. Let's go get those eggs before they thaw."
With the lake frozen solid, Max, Ben, and Gwen scrambled out of the rowboat and hurried across the ice, climbing onto the deck of the frozen poaching vessel. They moved quietly, slipping past the frozen mercenaries until they reached the glass container.
Just as the three of them grabbed the heavy container, a harsh click sounded from the shadows.
A mercenary who had managed to avoid the freeze ray stepped out from behind a crate, leveling a heavy assault rifle right at them. "You folks should've minded your own business," the man sneered, his finger tightening on the trigger. "Now we're gonna do this the hard way."
Max instantly shifted his stance, raising both arms to shield Ben and Gwen, slowly backing them away from the barrel of the gun.
The mercenary chuckled, taking a confident step forward.
A streak of blue-white light hit him from the side. The man's sinister smile froze—literally. A thick layer of frost encased him from head to toe, turning him into a perfect, heavily armed popsicle.
Max didn't waste a second. "Grab the eggs, let's move!"
As they hurried past the frozen mercenary, Gwen paused just long enough to knock on his icy helmet. "Looks like the hard way just froze over, tough guy."
"Klein! Catch!" Max shouted. He hauled the two massive eggs out of the container and hurled them over the railing toward the frozen lake below.
Bang! CRACK!
The sound of shattering ice violently interrupted their escape. Jonah Melville's submersible mech tore free from its frozen prison, its hydraulic joints screaming. Out on the lake, the Kraken shattered her icy restraints as well, roaring into the night sky.
"My eggs!" Melville screamed, his eyes tracking the two massive orbs flying through the air toward Articguana.
Articguana caught the heavy eggs effortlessly, cradling them against his chest. He looked up at the furious poacher. "I highly doubt your 'eggs' are this massive!"
With a heavy stomp of his right foot, Articguana shattered the ice beneath him. Holding an egg securely under each arm, he plunged into the dark, freezing depths of the lake.
ROAR!
Seeing her children vanish beneath the surface, the Kraken immediately dove after him, her massive tentacles propelling her through the water like a torpedo.
"My money! I mean, my eggs!" Melville slammed his fists against his control panels, trying to force his mech to pursue. But breaking free from the absolute zero ice had drained his power reserves, and several vital hydraulic lines were completely frozen shut. The machine sputtered, sparked, and died, leaving him stranded on the deck.
Deep beneath the surface, Articguana swam with surprising speed. The water rushed past his gills, but the Kraken was relentless. She trailed right behind him, her massive tentacles lashing out through the dark water. Articguana twisted and barrel-rolled, narrowly dodging the heavy strikes that threatened to crush him.
He swam deeper, scanning the murky bottom for the creature's nest. The lakebed was vast, dark, and covered in thick silt. Finding a specific crater down here was like finding a needle in a haystack.
Articguana grumbled a stream of bubbles. He briefly considered just dropping the eggs right there in the open water and swimming away. But his pride flared. If he just dropped them and ran, the giant squid would think he was terrified of her, and she would probably chase him all the way to the shore just to prove a point. He absolutely refused to do a thankless job halfway.
I am finding that stupid nest today, he thought stubbornly. Once a thought lodged itself in Klein's mind, his lazy demeanor vanished, replaced by sheer, unyielding stubbornness.
After what felt like an eternity of dodging angry tentacles, Articguana finally spotted an irregularly shaped, circular depression carved into the lakebed. He let out a mental sigh of relief, mixed with deep annoyance. I swam across half the damn lake to find this. Am I really that unlucky?
He swam down into the crater and gently placed the two massive eggs into the center of the nest.
The Kraken, who had been winding up for another strike, instantly halted. She swam forward, her aggressive posture melting away. She settled into the crater, wrapping her thick tentacles protectively around her eggs, completely ignoring Articguana.
Seeing the family reunited, Articguana didn't linger. He kicked off the lakebed and shot straight up toward the surface.
Ploof!
Articguana breached the surface, landing heavily on a floating chunk of ice.
Rat-tat-tat-tat!
Heavy caliber bullets rained down on him, sparking and pinging harmlessly off his thick, frosty scales.
"You overgrown lizard freak! Give me back my eggs, or your little friends are going to have a very bad night!"
Articguana snapped his head up. On the deck of the boat, Jonah Melville was aiming a heavy rifle straight at Max, Ben, and Gwen. The three of them had been surrounded and tied up by the remaining mercenaries.
The air around Articguana seemed to drop another ten degrees. His lazy, trollish demeanor evaporated instantly.
In Klein's worldview, messing around with small-fry villains was fun. It was a game. That was why he rarely used his heavy-hitting aliens for petty thugs. But the moment someone crossed the line and threatened his family, the game was over.
Articguana didn't say a word. He just raised his heavy claw and slapped the Omnitrix symbol on his chest.
"Way Big!"
A pillar of quiet, serene blue light erupted from the ice, piercing the fog and shooting straight into the night sky. The light expanded, growing wider and taller until it dwarfed the poaching vessel entirely.
When the light faded, a towering giant stood in the center of the lake.
He was over fifty meters tall, a colossal titan of red and white armor. A massive blade-like horn protruded from his head, and his eyes glowed with the same quiet blue as the symbol resting on his massive chest. He stood like a mountain, his sheer scale inspiring absolute awe. But for the mercenaries on the boat, looking up at a being that could crush them by accidentally stepping backward, there was only pure, unadulterated terror.
Way Big slowly lowered his massive left hand. With surprising gentleness, he scooped up Max, Ben, and Gwen from the deck, lifting them safely away from the poachers.
The mercenaries didn't even wait for orders. They dropped their weapons and scrambled over the railings, diving into the freezing water in a desperate bid to escape.
"A To'kustar!" Max gasped, staring at the giant's glowing eyes from the safety of his massive palm.
"Cousin, you are so cool! This giant is unbelievable!" Ben cheered, completely unfazed by the height. Then he paused, looking at his grandfather. "Grandpa, you're doing it again. What are you even talking about?"
Gwen crossed her arms, equally confused but thrilled to be alive.
Down below, Jonah Melville was trembling so violently his knees knocked together. He stared up at the fifty-meter titan, a cold sweat drenching his back. "Uh... hey, buddy!" he yelled, his voice cracking. "Listen, I tied them up, but you took my eggs! So... we're even, right? Let's just call it even!"
Way Big's voice boomed down from the heavens, echoing across the water like rolling thunder. "Even? You threaten my family, and you want to call it even? You really are a bold little scoundrel."
Way Big raised his massive right hand and brought it down in a casual, devastating chop.
BOOM!
The massive poaching vessel, still partially encased in ice, split perfectly in two. The sheer force of the impact sent a shockwave across the lake, tossing the shattered halves of the boat into the air before they crashed down into the freezing depths. Melville screamed as he was thrown into the icy water alongside the rest of his crew.
With the threat neutralized, Way Big turned to head toward the shore. But as his massive head pivoted, his enhanced To'kustar vision caught a faint glimmer in the far distance. Something was out there, miles away, barely visible even from his towering vantage point. He narrowed his glowing eyes, committing the anomaly to memory before stepping toward the shoreline.
...
Not long after, the wail of sirens cut through the fog as the police arrived to dredge the surviving poachers out of the freezing lake. Jonah Melville and his crew were hauled away in handcuffs, shivering and thoroughly broken.
During the search and rescue sweep, the authorities found Captain Shaw. The eccentric sailor was clinging to a piece of driftwood, completely soaked but miraculously unharmed. To have survived the crossfire, the ice, and the sinking ships was nothing short of incredible luck.
As the paramedics wrapped a thermal blanket around his shivering shoulders, Captain Shaw stared out at the dark, rippling water. He didn't seem to care about his sunken boat or the freezing cold. He just kept muttering the same words over and over with a lovestruck grin.
"The Kraken... she's beautiful..."
It seemed that between Captain Shaw and the giant sea monster, it truly was true love.
