Chapter 1 - CHAPTER 1: THE RIVAL CEO

❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥

The room went silent the moment he walked in.

Not quiet—silent.

The kind of silence that carried power. Authority. Control.

Zara Sterling didn't look up immediately.

She finished signing the document in front of her, slow and deliberate, letting the tension stretch just a second longer than necessary.

Then she lifted her gaze.

And there he was.

Adrian Cole.

So this was the man everyone wouldn't stop talking about.

Tailored black suit. Perfect posture. The kind of presence that didn't ask for attention—it commanded it. His sharp jawline was set, his expression unreadable, but his eyes…

Cold. Calculating. Dangerous.

Zara leaned back slightly in her chair, crossing one leg over the other.

Unimpressed.

Or at least, that's what she made sure it looked like.

"Mr. Cole," she said smoothly, her voice calm enough to cut through the tension. "You're late."

A subtle shift moved through the room. No one spoke to Adrian Cole like that.

No one.

His gaze snapped to hers instantly.

And for a brief second—just a second—something flickered in his eyes.

Interest.

Then it was gone.

"Ms. Sterling," he replied, voice low and controlled, stepping further into the boardroom. "I don't make a habit of being early for things that waste my time."

A few people around the table shifted uncomfortably.

Zara didn't.

Instead, she smiled.

Slow. Sharp. Dangerous.

"Then you're going to hate this meeting," she said.

Silence again.

But this time, it was heavier.

Charged.

Adrian stopped directly across from her seat. Close enough that she could see the faint crease between his brows. Close enough that she noticed how his presence filled the space like it belonged to him.

Like everything did.

He pulled out the chair opposite hers and sat down, his movements controlled, precise.

"Let's get straight to it," he said. "Your company is underperforming."

A murmur broke out.

Zara didn't react immediately.

She simply tapped her pen once against the table, then tilted her head slightly.

"And yet," she replied coolly, "you're the one being forced into a merger with us."

That landed.

Hard.

A few executives avoided eye contact.

Adrian's gaze didn't leave hers.

Not for a second.

"Don't confuse necessity with equality," he said.

There it was.

Arrogance.

Zara felt something spark in her chest—sharp, electric.

Annoyance.

Or something dangerously close to it.

She leaned forward slightly, resting her elbows on the table.

"Don't confuse confidence with superiority," she shot back.

Their eyes locked.

And suddenly, the room didn't matter anymore.

Not the board members.

Not the deal.

Not the billions on the line.

Just him.

Just her.

A battle.

Unspoken. Unyielding.

And completely out of control.

The presentation started, but neither of them paid attention.

Not really.

Every comment he made, she challenged.

Every point she raised, he dissected.

Back and forth.

Push and pull.

War in suits.

Until—

"Enough."

The word cut through the room like a blade.

The chairman stood, clearly fed up.

"This merger is not optional," he said firmly. "Both of you will learn to work together. Or you will both lose everything."

Silence followed.

Zara's jaw tightened slightly.

Adrian didn't move.

But something shifted.

Something real.

Because this wasn't just about ego anymore.

This was about survival.

The meeting ended twenty minutes later.

Chairs scraped. Papers shuffled. People rushed out like they needed air.

Zara stayed seated.

So did Adrian.

Of course he did.

She gathered her files slowly, aware—very aware—of his gaze still on her.

Watching.

Measuring.

Judging.

Finally, she stood.

And that's when he spoke.

"Confident," he said.

She paused.

Turned slightly.

Their eyes met again.

Closer now.

Too close.

"Arrogant," she corrected.

A faint smirk touched his lips.

The first real expression she'd seen from him.

"Dangerous combination," he said.

Zara stepped closer, closing the distance between them until the air felt tight.

Charged.

Unsteady.

"Only for people who can't handle it," she replied.

For a moment—just one—

Something shifted between them.

Not anger.

Not rivalry.

Something hotter.

Something neither of them was ready to name.

Adrian's gaze dropped briefly—to her lips—before returning to her eyes.

And that was it.

That tiny, dangerous moment.

That mistake.

Because Zara felt it too.

And she hated it.

"Stay out of my way, Ms. Sterling," he said, his voice quieter now. More personal.

"Or what?" she challenged.

His jaw tightened slightly.

"Or you'll regret it."

Zara smiled again.

But this time, it wasn't controlled.

It was real.

"And if I don't?" she asked softly.

A pause.

A dangerous one.

Adrian leaned in just enough for only her to hear.

"Then this merger won't be the only thing that gets complicated."

Her breath caught.

Just slightly.

Just enough for him to notice.

And that?

That was a problem.

As he walked past her and out of the room, Zara remained still.

Composed.

Untouchable.

At least on the outside.

But inside?

Everything had changed.

Because for the first time in years…

Someone didn't just challenge her.

He matched her.

And that was dangerous.

Because Zara Sterling didn't lose.

Not in business.

Not in power.

And definitely not to a man like Adrian Cole.
