Nina stood in front of the window, watching the courtyard empty as darkness swallowed the last traces of evening. One by one, the heavy wooden doors of the pack house chambers shut with dull thuds that echoed through the night.
Then silence. An eerie, unnatural silence settled over the courtyard until there wasn't a single soul left outside.
Nina rubbed her arms, trying to chase away the sudden chill. Rodrigo had promised he would return before nightfall, but tonight was a full moon. She wasn't sure if he'd said it just to keep her from worrying, or if he had truly meant it.
Nina exhaled and turned to the bed, she'd barely taken a step when it came.
A loud dong sounded from afar off. Nina turned back to the window, and right in the middle of the sky was the full moon.
She had four full moons left.
