Chapter 1 - chapter 1

CHAPTER ONE: THE CALL OF THE MOON

The first time Lyra heard the voice, she was ten years old.

It came to her in a dream—soft, distant, yet commanding.

"Come home."

She woke drenched in sweat, her heart pounding violently against her chest. The curtains fluttered though the window was closed, and for a brief moment, she swore the room glowed silver.

Her mother told her it was just a nightmare.

But Lyra knew better.

Because the voice never left.

Years later, the feeling remained.

Standing at the edge of Blackridge Forest, Lyra tightened her grip on her suitcase. The wind brushed past her, carrying a scent she couldn't quite place—earthy, wild… alive.

"This is it," she whispered to herself.

Blackridge was nothing like the city she left behind. It was quieter. Heavier. As if the air itself held secrets.

And somehow, it felt familiar.

Too familiar.

The town was small—barely a handful of shops, a diner, and a general store. People stared as she walked past, their gazes lingering just a second too long.

It made her uneasy.

But not as uneasy as the forest.

Every time she looked toward it, something inside her stirred.

A pull.

A whisper.

Come home.

That night, the moon was full.

Lyra stood by the window of her small rented cabin, unable to sleep. The moonlight spilled across the wooden floor, pale and hypnotic.

Her chest tightened.

It was happening again.

Her pulse quickened. Her breathing grew shallow.

And then—

Pain.

Sharp. Sudden. Consuming.

She gasped, gripping the edge of the table as her body trembled. Heat surged through her veins like fire, and for a moment, she thought she might collapse.

"What… is happening to me?" she whispered.

Then she heard it.

A howl.

Low. Deep. Powerful.

It echoed through the night, sending chills down her spine.

But instead of fear…

She felt drawn to it.

Before she could think, Lyra grabbed her jacket and stepped outside.

The forest loomed ahead, dark and endless.

And yet, her feet moved on their own.

Step by step.

Deeper and deeper.

Meanwhile—

Kael Draven stood at the center of the clearing, his golden eyes fixed on the moon above.

Something was wrong.

He could feel it.

The air had shifted. The energy of the forest had changed.

"Alpha," Darius said, stepping beside him. "The pack is restless."

Kael's jaw tightened.

"I know."

Then it hit him.

A scent.

Unfamiliar.

Intoxicating.

Dangerous.

His eyes narrowed.

"Someone is in our territory."

Lyra stumbled through the trees, her breath uneven. Branches scratched against her skin, but she barely felt it.

The pull was stronger now.

Almost overwhelming.

And then—

She stepped into the clearing.

For a moment, time froze.

Her eyes met his.

Kael.

Tall. Broad. Radiating raw power. His presence alone made the air feel heavy.

And those eyes—

Gold. Burning. Inhuman.

Lyra's breath caught.

"What… are you?" she whispered.

Kael didn't answer.

Because in that moment—

He realized something impossible.

She smelled like the moon itself.

The pack emerged from the shadows, surrounding her.

Low growls filled the air.

Lyra's heart raced, but she didn't run.

She couldn't.

Not when her entire being felt anchored to him.

Kael stepped forward slowly, his gaze locked onto hers.

"You shouldn't be here," he said, his voice low and dangerous.

"I didn't mean to come," she replied, her voice trembling. "I just… felt something."

His expression darkened.

"That's not possible."

But it was.

Because he felt it too.

A connection.

Primal. Unbreakable.

Forbidden.

Suddenly, Lyra gasped.

The pain returned—stronger this time.

She dropped to her knees, clutching her chest.

"Make it stop…" she cried.

Kael froze.

This wasn't normal.

This wasn't human.

Then it happened.

The wind howled.

The moonlight intensified.

And Lyra screamed.

Her eyes flickered—

For a split second—

Silver.

Kael's breath caught.

"No…" he murmured.

Because he knew what that meant.

Or at least—

What it shouldn't mean.

The Moon had chosen her.

And if the legends were true—

She wasn't just a threat.

She was the beginning of something that could destroy them all.

Kael stepped closer, his voice barely above a whisper.

"Who are you?"

Lyra looked up at him, fear and confusion swirling in her eyes.

"I don't know."

But deep inside—

Something ancient stirred.

And it was waking up.
