"Honey!" Mrs. Hawthorne cried out. She tried to pull him back, but with more zombies flooding in, she could barely protect herself.
Mr. Hawthorne was no longer a young man, and he had fallen hard. To make matters worse, someone's frantic foot had stomped on his calf in the chaos. The searing pain instantly drained the color from his face. He couldn't stand, let alone move quickly.
"Protect Mr. Hawthorne!"
A superpower user roared, swinging a metal pipe to shatter a zombie's skull as he tried to break through to rescue him.
But once the gap was breached, zombies poured in like a bursting dam.
The two superpower users fought for their lives. Fireballs and earth spikes flew, temporarily clearing a small open space.
Mrs. Hawthorne seized the opportunity to help her husband struggle to his feet. But he couldn't put any weight on his injured leg, and their progress was agonizingly slow.
