Chapter 2 - I'm not divorcing

The wooden door creaked open.

For a brief moment, all sound in the courtyard seemed to disappear.

Every pair of eyes turned toward her.

Mei Lin stepped out.

The sunlight felt almost unreal on her face. The familiar courtyard, the well, the low walls—everything was exactly as she remembered.

And standing there—

Her husband.

Ming Li.

Tall. Calm. Composed.

But his eyes…

They were tired.

And sad.

That sadness pierced straight through her heart.

In her last life, she had ignored that look.

This time, she saw it clearly.

Her feet slowed.

The air was thick with tension.

Her mother-in-law folded her arms tightly.

"Finally decided to come out?" she snapped. "Good. Let's settle this."

Her father-in-law stood beside her, expression stern.

The elder brother-in-law looked impatient.

And her sister-in-law—

She smirked slightly.

Ming Li looked at Mei Lin for a long moment.

Then, calmly, he spoke.

"If you want to leave… I won't stop you."

His voice was steady.

Too steady.

"I've already prepared everything."

He reached into his pocket and took out a small cloth pouch.

Inside—

Money.

"Two hundred yuan," he said. "It's what I can give you."

The courtyard went silent again.

"This will be our divorce settlement."

Each word felt like a blade.

Mei Lin's heart dropped.

In her past life—

This was the moment she nodded.

The moment she took the money.

The moment she walked away.

Her fingers trembled slightly.

No.

Not this time.

Her sister-in-law suddenly spoke, her tone light but sharp:

"This is a good decision, younger brother."

She looked at Mei Lin with undisguised disdain.

"With your salary, you can easily find someone better. Someone with good character. Someone who can actually take care of your daughter."

The others nodded.

"Yes, yes—this is for the best."

"She's never been suitable."

"Better to separate early."

Their words overlapped, filling the courtyard like noise she had once accepted.

But today—

She stepped forward.

One step.

Then another.

"Enough."

Her voice wasn't loud.

But it cut through everything.

The courtyard fell silent again.

Ming Li's hand froze mid-air, still holding the pouch.

Mei Lin walked until she stood directly in front of him.

Her eyes met his.

For a second, neither spoke.

Then—

She shook her head.

"I'm not divorcing."

Silence.

Absolute.

Her mother-in-law blinked.

Her sister-in-law's smile froze.

Her father-in-law frowned deeply.

Even Ming Li's calm expression cracked slightly.

"…What?" he asked quietly.

Mei Lin lifted her chin.

"I said," she repeated clearly,

"I'm not divorcing you."

She took a breath.

"And I'm not leaving."

The words fell heavily.

Like something being anchored into the ground.

"Have you lost your mind?" her mother-in-law snapped.

"Weren't you the one insisting on leaving before?!"

"Yes," Mei Lin said calmly.

"I was wrong."

That answer stunned them more than anything.

Her sister-in-law scoffed.

"Oh? Now you changed your mind? You think marriage is a joke?"

Mei Lin didn't look at her.

Her gaze remained on Ming Li.

"I was blind before," she said softly. "I didn't understand what I had."

Her voice trembled—but didn't break.

"But now I do."

Ming Li stared at her.

His fingers tightened around the pouch.

"You don't need to say this," he said quietly. "If you want to leave, just leave."

His voice dropped slightly.

"Don't… pretend."

That word hurt.

But she deserved it.

Mei Lin took another step closer.

"I'm not pretending."

She spoke slowly.

Carefully.

"As long as you don't push me away—

I won't leave you again."

The courtyard held its breath.

Behind them—

A small voice suddenly rang out.

"Mother!"

Their daughter ran forward, eyes bright but anxious.

She grabbed Mei Lin's hand tightly.

"Mother… you won't leave Father and me, right?"

The child's voice trembled.

That tiny fear—

That small, fragile hope—

Broke something inside Mei Lin completely.

She dropped to her knees.

Pulled her daughter into her arms.

"No," she whispered, her voice shaking.

"I won't leave."

She hooked her little finger with her daughter's.

"Pinky promise."

The child's face lit up instantly.

"Promise!"

Ming Li watched them silently.

The pouch in his hand slowly lowered.

Something in his eyes changed—

Not trust.

Not yet.

But doubt… about his doubt.

And for the first time—

The future had shifted.

The courtyard was still.

No one spoke.

Ming Li looked at Mei Lin, then at their daughter in her arms. His expression didn't soften—if anything, it grew more restrained.

"Don't make promises you can't keep," he said quietly.

The words were calm.

But they hurt more than shouting.

Mei Lin's chest tightened.

In her past life, she had broken every promise without hesitation. Now, even her sincerity sounded like a lie.

Before she could respond—

Ming Li stepped forward.

He gently took their daughter from her arms.

The little girl blinked, confused, still clinging to hope.

Ming Li lowered his head… and kissed her softly on the cheek.

"Your mother will stay with you," he said gently.

"With you and Papa."

The courtyard froze.

Everyone stared.

Ming Li was never a man of open affection. He rarely showed emotion in front of others.

And Mei Lin—

She had never once hugged or kissed their daughter like this before.

Her daughter's eyes lit up, happiness spilling over instantly.

"Really?!"

Ming Li nodded.

"Really."

Mei Lin stood there, stunned.

A warmth spread through her chest—but along with it came guilt so sharp it almost made her dizzy.

Even now… he's helping me.

She swallowed the emotion and knelt down, smoothing her daughter's hair.

"Go play with your cousin for a while," she said softly.

"Okay!"

The little girl ran off happily, as if the storm had already passed.

But the real storm—

Was just beginning.

---

Mei Lin turned.

Her gaze fell on the table.

The envelope.

That thin, ordinary piece of paper that had once destroyed everything.

Slowly… she walked toward it.

Every step felt heavy.

Every memory pressed down on her shoulders—

The letter.

The choice.

The departure.

The regret.

She picked it up.

Her fingers tightened.

In her past life, she had protected this letter like it was her future.

This time—

She didn't hesitate.

Rip.

The sound was sharp.

Clear.

Final.

Everyone froze.

She tore it again.

And again.

White fragments fell like scattered snow onto the ground.

"Mei Lin—!"

Ming Li moved instantly.

He stepped forward, crouched down, and tried to gather the torn pieces.

"We can still fix this," he said quickly. "If we piece it together—if we send it—"

His voice wasn't panicked.

But it carried urgency.

He didn't understand.

Why she would throw away something she had fought so hard for.

Mei Lin reached out.

And held his hand.

His movements stopped.

Her grip wasn't strong.

But it was firm.

"I'm not leaving," she said softly.

Not loud.

Not dramatic.

Just… certain.

Ming Li looked at her.

Really looked.

For the first time—

There was no hesitation in her eyes.

No escape.

No calculation.

Only… resolve.

Slowly, he released the torn paper.

---

Then—

Mei Lin turned.

And without warning—

She knelt down.

Right in front of her parents-in-law.

The courtyard erupted in shock.

"Mei Lin!"

"What are you doing?!"

Even her mother-in-law stepped back in disbelief.

Mei Lin lowered her head completely.

Her forehead almost touched the ground.

"I'm sorry."

Her voice trembled.

But it was clear.

"When I fainted… I realized something."

Her fingers clenched against the ground.

"My husband… and my daughter… are the most important people in my life."

Her throat tightened.

"I was wrong before. Completely wrong."

"I won't leave again."

Silence.

Heavy.

Unbelievable.

Her mother-in-law stared at her as if seeing a stranger.

Her sister-in-law's expression stiffened.

Even the elder brother-in-law couldn't speak.

Only her father-in-law remained steady.

He looked down at her for a long time.

Then—

He spoke.

"This is the last time."

His voice was cold. Firm. Final.

"If you ever create a scene like this again—

or speak of leaving—

you will be divorced immediately."

A pause.

"No money. No discussion."

Mei Lin didn't lift her head.

"Yes, Father."

He turned.

"Let's go."

Her mother-in-law hesitated for a moment… then followed.

Her brother-in-law and sister-in-law left behind them, still in shock.

The courtyard emptied.

Just like that.

---

Only two people remained.

Mei Lin—

Still kneeling.

And Ming Li—

Standing silently behind her.

The torn pieces of the letter lay scattered between them.

A past she had destroyed.

A future she had chosen.

Slowly—

Mei Lin lifted her head.

She didn't turn around.

But she knew—

He was still there.

Watching.

Waiting.

Not believing fully—

But no longer walking away.
