Chapter 2 - TOO CLOSE TO WALK AWAY

1Alina didn't remember deciding to stay.1But she did.1Maybe it was the rain… maybe it was the way his eyes held hers like he already understood something about her she hadn't even admitted to herself.1Or maybe… it was him.1"Do you always approach strangers like this?" she asked, folding her arms slightly not to shut him out, but to steady herself.1Lucien's gaze didn't waver.1"Only the ones who look like they're about to change something in my life."1Her lips parted, but no words came out.1That was bold.1Too bold.1And yet… she felt it again that pull. That dangerous curiosity tightening in her chest.1"You don't even know my name," she said, quieter now.1"Then tell me," he replied.1It wasn't a request.1It felt like an invitation.1A step forward… into something neither of them had defined yet.1"Alina."1He repeated it softly, like he was testing how it felt on his tongue.1"Alina…"1The way he said her name sent a subtle warmth through her unexpected and unsettling.1"Lucien," he added.1Of course it was.1The name fit him too well smooth, controlled… with something darker underneath.1Another silence fell between them, but this time it was different. Less cautious. More aware.1More charged.1"You shouldn't be standing out here in the rain," he said, his eyes briefly scanning her face, her damp hair, the way her fingers tightened slightly against her coat.1"And yet you are," she replied.1A faint smirk touched his lips.1"I'm not the one pretending I mind it."1Her breath caught.1He noticed everything.1Before she could respond, he stepped closer again just enough to close the distance she hadn't realized she was keeping.1Now, she could feel the warmth of him despite the cool night air.1"Let me guess," he murmured, his voice lower now, softer… but somehow more intense.1"You tell yourself you like control."1Her pulse quickened.1"And you don't?" she challenged.1His eyes darkened slightly not with anger, but with something deeper. Something that made her stomach tighten in a way she couldn't ignore.1"I do," he said.1"But I also know when it's about to slip."1The words lingered between them.1Alina exhaled slowly, her heart beating harder now not from fear, but from awareness.1Of him.1Of herself.1Of how close they were.1Too close.1"You think you have me figured out already?" she asked.1Lucien tilted his head slightly, studying her.1"No," he said.1"I think you're trying very hard not to let me."1That did it.1Something in her cracked just a little.1Not weakness.1Not surrender.1But interest.1Real, undeniable interest.1And instead of stepping back, Alina took a step closer.1Now there was almost no space between them.1Her voice dropped, softer… more honest.1"Maybe I just haven't decided if you're worth it."1For the first time, something shifted in his expression.1Not surprise.1Approval.1"Careful," he said quietly.1"You're getting closer to dangerous territory."1Her lips curved slightly.1"Maybe I like dangerous."1A pause.1A breath.1A moment where neither of them moved… but everything between them did.1Lucien's gaze flickered to her lips again slower this time, less subtle.1And this time…1She noticed.1Her heart skipped.1The air felt heavier. Warmer.1Thicker.1Like something was about to happen.1But instead of closing the distance He stepped back.1Just enough to break the tension.1Alina blinked, caught off guard.1"I'll see you again," he said, calm, certain… like it wasn't a question.1Her brows pulled slightly.1"You're very sure of yourself."1"I am," he replied simply.1A beat passed.1Then, without another word, he turned and walked away disappearing into the rain and shadows as if he had never been there at all.1Alina stood frozen.1Confused.1Intrigued.1And frustratingly aware of the way her body still felt the absence of his closeness.1He didn't ask for her number.1Didn't try to prolong the moment.1Didn't chase.1And somehow… that made it worse.1Because now1She was the one thinking about him.1Wondering.1Waiting.1And deep down…1Already anticipating the next time their paths would cross.
