Chapter 1 - A Distant Memory

"I-I can't remember anything..."

"Hmm… an interesting effect. Fymia, get this idiot out of my sight!"

Fymia?

Abruptly, a throbbing pain intruded into her head, as though it were being smashed against a hard metal object—worse, like acid burning through her skull. She screamed in agony as the pain spread throughout her organs. The scream was so full of life, yet terrifying—like a sinner weeping for God to have pity on this dishonorable creature. One that could drive people mad, but failed to move the cold, indifferent strangers who had traded their humanity in the name of greed.

Suddenly, the dark, chaotic world shattered, causing her vision to blur before she could faintly make out her surroundings. In front of her was a metal table covered with a thin crimson cloth. Above it lay sharp, uncanny objects placed in orderly fashion.

And… what's that?

She squeezed her eyes, trying to take in more of the room, which unfortunately bore no fruit: only a third of it was properly lit. This was no surprise, since the only light source was a rusty ceiling lamp hanging at the center, failing to reach the forgotten corners. Perhaps not so forgotten, because at that instant she noticed a sharp pair of eyes in one corner, staring from the darkness—straight into hers.

Slowly, the eyes came closer and closer… revealing a woman in her thirties wearing a white coat—or maybe blue?

No idea. Who are these strange people? Where am I? And who even am I…

The woman grabbed her arm, interrupting her thoughts, and dragged her into what seemed like an endless hallway. For such a large space, it was surprisingly quiet, as if the walls were ready to suck the soul out of everyone who came here.

Walls?

A question struck her mind—why were all the walls white? No, not just the walls: the people, the ceilings, the lights, and even the few pieces of furniture attached to the walls. Honestly, they looked more like balls with red lasers shooting out. She reckoned these people must be mad to have them as decorations.Well, they definitely were, considering their obsession with the color white.

After walking for what felt like decades through a hallway of door after door, the woman—whose name was believed to be Fymia—brought her to a room at the far end.

"Go in." A very soft voice came from her mouth.

In? Is she insane? Leaving me alone in this hideous, soulless place for who knows how long. I clearly detest her company, but still…

"What is going on?! Why can't I remember what the hell happened before I arrived at this ridiculous confinement?" she protested.

Without even batting an eye, the woman shoved her into the room and locked the door.

"You... tch."

How kind. At least you could have asked politely. God! Don't they have manners?

___

Bearing a strong resemblance to the exterior, the room was rather plain—the kind that would strike any person with boredom, and possibly madness, if they stayed too long. There wasn't much furniture either: only an old, dirty mattress and a shabby bed placed in the left corner of the room. Not a pillow or blanket was provided, even though the atmosphere screamed cold.Beside the bed stood a wooden shelf and a chair whose corners were covered with triangle-shaped objects. On the right wall was a tall mirror, although it could, without a doubt, pass as a dusty board.

What is this, a mental asylum?

Oh, a bed! Very convenient, as I was hoping to get some rest… No… no… what am I even thinking? I can't be rotting here in this strange place, which might as well be a mental hospital. No way they think I am crazy! Or… am I? No! Stop it! What am I even thinking? But… why can't I remember anything? Why do all my attempts to recall end in failure? This is utterly absurd!

Ishall save you from here…

Let me in…

Was that a voice?

Sigh. I really must have lost my sanity. How annoying.

No, you have not…

Am I hallucinating? A ghost?… But this place has never been normal from the start, has it? I guess this might as well be real… perhaps.

Despite her doubt, she softly muttered, "Hello?".

.....

At that critical junction, a loud noise echoed through the hallway, sending chills down the spine of whoever heard it. Following the sound was a terrifying rumble, rapidly shaking the building itself.

Boom! Boom!

"Mama! Papa! Bad people!! BAD!!!"
