Chapter 42 - Chapter 42

That night everything changed.

The itching had become unbearable. The rash had spread further. Sleep was impossible. For a man who ruled through strength this was humiliation. And slowly his pride broke. He sent for Luo He.

When Luo He entered, the king's posture had changed. Not weak. But no longer absolute.

"I will tell her," the king said quietly. Luo He gave a slight nod. That same night

the ShaMo King called for Vera. She entered, her expression unreadable.

"What is it?" she asked. The king hesitated. For the first time he struggled.

Then he spoke. "I failed her," he said.

Vera's eyes narrowed slightly. "I did try," he continued. "At first I brought physicians. Medicines. Healers from distant lands." His voice grew heavier.

"But nothing worked."

A pause.

"It was incurable so then I stopped."

Silence filled the room. "I chose to let her die because it was her wish not because I was greedy she was the most precious thing I ever had in my life and now it's you her last gift to me. I sill regret for not having the power to save her." The words landed like a blade. Vera stood still. Frozen.

"I told myself it was necessary," the king said. "That a ruler cannot be ruled by emotion." His voice lowered. "But I was wrong." A long silence followed.

Then Vera's breathing trembled.

For the first time in her life Tears formed.

She didn't cry when her mother died.

She didn't cry through years of hatred.

But now she broke. She turned away tears falling silently at first. Then uncontrollably.

The ShaMo King watched. Helpless. And in that momentThey were no longer king and warrior. Just father and daughter.

Broken. Reaching toward something they had lost. When she finally left the chamber Her eyes were red. Her steps unsteady.

And Luo He was waiting. He entered silently. The king looked at him. Not with anger. Not with pride. But with something else. "Do it," the king said. Luo He stepped forward. He administered a sedative. The king's body relaxed.

His breathing slowed.

Then carefully Luo He began the treatment. He introduced the antibiotic.

Precise and measured. The quietly he added something else. Tiny beads,

Invisible poison lay dormant harmless in the blood stream until triggered. "And when you burn your power " Luo He thought. "They will awaken." Moments later it was done. The next morning the king woke. The rash gone. The itching gone. His body restored.

He looked at Luo He with a mix of relief and respect. "You have my thanks," he said. Luo He gave a slight nod. But his eyes remained unreadable. Now only eleven days remained. Eleven days

until the girl turned thirteen. And on the night of her 13 birthday and wedding.

The ShaMo King would claim her.

Without hesitation. Without resistance.

Or so he believed. Because what he didn't know was that the girl had her own plan. She was not naive nor innocent as her father suspected. Under Xu Mun's relentless training She had become something else entirely.

Sharp. Patient. Dangerous. She had already begun to surpass her father. Minipulating him. Guiding his decisions. And now she intended to take it further. She made her father come here for a reason. She planned to seduce the ShaMo King. Become his wife. And from there control him like a puppet. All for one purpose. Revenge.

Her father still believed she was a child.

Still believed she needed protection.

He had no idea what she was becoming.

And Luo He knew the truth. "This," he thought quietly, "is why I came." Not for Xu Mun. But for his daughter.

The next morning, the desert fortress stirred slowly under the rising sun.

Golden light poured through the narrow stone openings, painting the walls in warm hues of amber and fire. Outside, the winds had calmed, leaving only a soft whisper of sand shifting across the dunes.

The storm from the night before had passed but the tension within the fortress had not. Luo He stood by the window of his chamber, his hands resting calmly behind his back. His gaze stretched far beyond the horizon, as if he were already looking at things yet to happen. A soft knock broke the silence. He didn't turn.

"Enter." The door creaked open.

Heavy footsteps followed measured, confident, but not careless. He already knew who it was. Vera. She stepped into the room, her tall frame casting a long shadow across the stone floor. The morning light caught against her bronze skin and sharp features, giving her an almost imposing presence. She was dressed in light desert armor, her hair tied back tightly, her expression unreadable.

For a moment, she said nothing. Neither did he. The silence between them wasn't awkward it was deliberate.

Then she stepped forward. And, without hesitation, dropped to one knee. The movement was sudden. Firm. Final.

"I have come," she said, her voice steady, "to pledge my loyalty." Luo He slowly turned to face her. His expression didn't change but his eyes sharpened slightly. "To me?" he asked calmly. Vera lifted her head just enough to meet his gaze. "Yes." No hesitation. No doubt.

"Not to my father. Not to this kingdom." Her voice hardened slightly. "To you."

A faint breeze slipped through the window, stirring the edge of her cloak.

Luo He watched her carefully. "Why?" he asked as he was completely oblivious though he was just waiting for this. It wasn't suspicion. It was confirmation.

Vera's jaw tightened slightly. "Because you see things others don't," she said. "You act when others hesitate. And…" she paused briefly, "you are not bound by weakness."

Her eyes darkened. "My father is."

The words carried weight. Not just anger but years of it. "He hides behind power," she continued. "Behind status. Behind fear." Her fists clenched slightly.

"But you" she looked at him directly now, "you don't need any of that." Silence.

Luo He took a slow step toward her.

"Loyalty is not something you offer lightly," he said. "And once given it cannot be taken back." "I know." She said.

"Serving me," Luo He continued, "means you follow my commands. Even when you don't agree. Even when it costs you." "I understand." "Even," his voice lowered slightly, "if it leads you to stand against your own blood."

That made her pause. Just for a second.

But it was there. Then her expression hardened again. "I have no blood worth protecting," she said coldly. The room fell silent again. Luo He studied her for a moment longer. Then "Look at me."

She did. "Say it properly." Vera straightened slightly, her posture firm even on one knee. "I, Vera," she said clearly, "pledge my loyalty to you, My load. For now and always." Her voice didn't waver.

"I will follow your command. I will act in your interest. I will not betray you under any circumstance." A brief pause. "Even if it costs me my life." The words echoed softly against the stone walls. Luo He held her gaze. Then "Stand." She rose immediately.

He stepped closer, stopping just within arm's reach. "Loyalty is earned," he said quietly. "And once earned it is never wasted." He extended his hand.

"From this moment on," he continued, "you are mine." Vera didn't hesitate.

She placed her hand in his. Firm grip.

No tremble. No doubt. "Good," Luo He said.

A faint smile touched his lips but it didn't reach his eyes. Because this was not emotion. It was calculation. He released her hand and turned away, walking back toward the window. Behind him, Vera remained standing, silent, waiting.

He spoke without turning.

"Your father will fall one day," he said calmly. Her eyes narrowed slightlybut she said nothing.

"And when he does…" he continued, "this kingdom will need someone strong enough to take the throne." Now she understood. Not fully. But enough.

"You intend to" she began slowly.

"Yes." Luo He glanced over his shoulder.

"I intend to put you there." The words landed heavily. Not as a promise.

As a decision.

Vera's heartbeat quickened slightly but her expression remained controlled.

"And in return?" she asked. Luo He turned back to the horizon.

"You should stand with me as a sister of my own flesh and blood." Silence.

Then she nodded. "Yes." That was enough. Luo He's gaze returned to the desert beyond. The endless dunes.

The shifting sands. Unpredictable.

Unstable. Yet even they could be shaped. Slowly. Carefully. Inevitably.

"Step one," he murmured under his breath.

Behind him, Vera stood still no longer just a princess. But a piece placed exactly where he wanted. And as the morning sun rose higher over the desert A new ruler had already begun to take form. Even if the kingdom itself didn't know it yet.
