Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: Rewards of Defiance

Ethan emerged from the well just as the sun climbed higher over the slums. His new Cloak of Faded Shadows blended him into the morning mist, making his movements even harder to notice. The two Minor Healing Potions had done their work — most of his wounds had closed, leaving only faint scars and lingering soreness.

But the real prize rested safely in his inventory.

He found a relatively safe corner behind a collapsed shed and opened his status window.

Ethan let out a slow breath, a rare spark of satisfaction in his gray eyes. These rewards were far better than expected for a mere extra. The permanent Agility gains from relentless aura farming were already reshaping how his body responded — lighter, faster, more instinctive.

He allocated both Skill Points into Shadow Step and Flowing Footwork, pushing them even higher.

With the coins, food and medicine for Liam were no longer an immediate crisis. The enhanced dagger felt good in his hand — a real weapon at last.

But the silver fragment of the Cure-All Elixir remained the true treasure. One piece secured. Two more needed.

The hardship hadn't vanished. His body still ached with exhaustion, the system's faint "fate correction" warnings lingered at the edge of his vision like a noose tightening slowly. The world itself seemed irritated by his continued existence.

He slipped back into the shack just as Liam stirred awake.

"Brother… you look like you fought a dragon," Liam whispered weakly, eyes widening at the new scars and bloodstained clothes.

"It's nothing serious," Ethan replied softly. He handed over fresh bread and carefully mixed a small dose of healing potion into water. "Drink this slowly. It should ease the fever and give you some strength."

Liam sipped it, and a bit of color returned to his hollow cheeks.

Ethan sat against the wall, the new dagger resting across his knees, and allowed himself a brief moment of rest. The next fragment would be deeper and far more dangerous. The landlord's thugs would come for the rent soon. And the Slum Purge loomed closer with every passing hour.

The grind continued — painful, exhausting, and absolutely necessary.

As Ethan's breathing evened out into light sleep, the air inside the tiny shack grew unnaturally cold. A heavy, oppressive presence filled the cramped space, making the faint blue aura around his legs flicker and dim like a candle in a storm.

A smooth, cultured voice cut through the silence, rich with amusement and ancient boredom.

"My, my… what a delightful little rebellion we have here."

Ethan's eyes snapped open. In one fluid motion, he activated Shadow Step, appearing between the voice and his brother, dagger drawn and glowing with faint shadow energy.

A man now lounged casually in the darkest corner of the shack — a space that had been empty seconds ago. He was tall, impeccably dressed in a tailored black suit that looked obscenely out of place among the poverty and rot. Neat black hair, light stubble, and eyes that held the weight of eternity mixed with casual disdain.

For a fraction of a second, massive white wings — beautiful yet somehow corrupted — flickered into view behind him before vanishing.

The man smiled, slow and predatory, like a cat toying with a particularly interesting mouse.

"An extra who refuses to vanish. A glitch scribbling over the sacred script with his own clumsy little footsteps." He tilted his head, studying Ethan with piercing intensity. "Most souls in your pathetic position would have curled up and accepted their fate by now. 'Oh woe is me, I'm just background noise.' But you… you keep moving. Farming your precious aura in the dark like a desperate rat refusing to drown. How terribly… human of you."

Lucifer Morningstar rose gracefully to his feet, his movements elegant and unhurried, yet radiating overwhelming power.

"I am Lucifer Morningstar — the Morning Star, the Lightbringer, the one who told dear old Dad exactly where He could shove His precious 'plan.'" His voice dropped into a velvet mockery. "And here you are, a nobody extra, daring to rewrite a story that was never meant for the likes of you. Tell me, little anomaly…"

He took one slow step forward, the temperature plummeting further as frost began to form on the edges of the wooden walls.

"How far are you willing to fall to save that sickly boy behind you? Because in my rather extensive experience, defiance always demands a price. And I do so love collecting debts."

Lucifer's eyes gleamed with dark amusement as he glanced at the glowing silver fragment in Ethan's possession, then back to Ethan's defiant stance.

"After all… even the Devil was once just another obedient son who decided he'd rather rule in Hell than serve in Heaven. So, tell me — what kind of devil are you willing to become?"

Ethan gripped the dagger tighter, heart pounding, every muscle coiled with his newly enhanced movement skills and aura resonance.

The Devil himself had taken notice of the side character who refused to vanish.

And the true cost of defiance had only just begun to reveal itself.
