Jace saw Phoebe with her head bowed, silent. Her small face was marred by a fresh injury, and she looked utterly pitiful. In the end, he could only let out a helpless sigh. He crouched in front of her and began applying medicine to her face.
"From now on, if you run into this kind of trouble again, don't get into a fight. Just call me directly." Jace's voice softened as he dabbed the medicine onto Phoebe's face. "You're already my woman. Why do you still have to handle things yourself?"
Jace's voice was deep, and when he spoke so softly, it was enough to make her heart pound—especially considering what he'd just said. Phoebe's face grew hot, but she managed to keep a clear head.
'She had no idea how many other identities he was hiding, but she was well aware of her own.'
'She was only with him for news about her brother.'
'And he... he just wanted to find a woman to bear his child.'
