Tears suddenly blurred her vision.
"Jett Westgate..." Her voice was choked with sobs. "What are you trying to do? Stop pushing me..."
Her tears fell one by one, splashing onto their clasped hands, onto the gun pressed against his heart.
His voice was desolate, as if he'd accepted everything. "To be ended by your hand... that would be a fine way to go."
She saw a barren wasteland in his eyes, like someone standing in ruins, looking at the emptiness all around, finally admitting they had nothing left.
Suddenly, she felt she no longer had the strength to hate him.
'How did it come to this?'
She couldn't pull the trigger.
She couldn't resign herself to going back with him.
She wanted to leave, but she couldn't get away.
And she was pregnant with his child.
She didn't know what to do.
All she could do was keep the gun raised, aimed at him, as tears streamed down her face.
It seemed fate enjoyed playing these kinds of jokes on her.
It always threw her unanswerable questions.
