Helena sat to the side, watching the three of them chat back and forth. They spoke rapid-fire Chinese that she couldn't quite understand, and the expression on her face shifted from confusion to disappointment.
She couldn't understand what they were saying, but she could tell from their tones and expressions that the atmosphere was growing more and more relaxed. Just moments ago, Caleb Carter had been confessing his feelings to her with a look of deep affection, but now it was as if he had forgotten she was even there.
"Carter… what are you all talking about? Do you even care about my feelings?"
Annelise Valentine coughed softly and muttered under her breath, "Damn. We left her hanging."
Caleb Carter immediately realized his mistake. "Helena, don't misunderstand. We were just talking about my cousin."
The group switched to English and explained to Helena the connections between all of them.
