When he first arrived near Riverview Temple, he had no idea where to even start digging. The temple grounds were too vast.
He wasn't even sure if she was still alive.
But there was nothing else he could do. He could only dig based on his memory, moving one stone after another. When he couldn't move one, he used a crowbar. When he couldn't pry it loose, he slammed his shoulder against it.
He dug and cried, cried and dug.
Then, he started rescuing people.
He heard someone shouting for help and followed the sound, digging through the debris. He pulled out a monk who was buried shallowly and had only minor injuries.
Then he heard a child crying and dug a seven or eight-year-old out from under the rubble. He handed the child to a doctor and kept digging.
...
He dug for a full ten hours. He had no idea how many times he had crossed the ruins, only that he had pulled out a total of thirteen people with his own hands.
Eight were dead. Five were alive.
