Annelise Valentine didn't care whether he actually liked it or not. As she ate, she chattered on, telling him how she and Chloe Fairchild used to sneak out of class in high school to go to a dessert shop, and how they would argue for ages over which dessert was the best.
Jett Westgate listened quietly, chiming in occasionally, his gaze fixed most of the time on her animated face.
He even picked up a napkin and gently wiped away a bit of coconut milk that had accidentally gotten on the corner of her mouth.
His movements were gentle, his eyes focused.
Annelise was taken aback by the gesture and mumbled softly, "I can get it..."
"Mm," he acknowledged, but he didn't pull his hand back until she had finished wiping it herself.
The two of them sat in the dessert shop, sharing a bowl of dessert that cost only a few dollars.
