Chapter 16 - Chapter 16: Enemy Hero Arrives on the Battlefield

Finally, there was the Eastern Teleportation Array. Before Lin Yu's beast horde even arrived, the herd of Mammoths was already running rampant through the forest.

They had thick, tough hides, and their astonishing size gave them an enormous amount of health. Furthermore, every stomp was a wide area-of-effect attack that the fragile Pea Shooters were powerless to stop.

Initially, Lin Yu's defensive line was quite effective. But as the number of surviving Mammoths grew, his position was easily breached.

This was when the Pea Shooters, Timid Mushrooms, and Potato Mines that Lin Yu had built throughout his territory came into play.

After breaking through the Defensive Array, the Mammoths were drawn to the tall plants within Lin Yu's territory. They scattered into the forest, looking for food.

Then, any Mammoth that strayed from the herd was out of luck. Whether they stepped on a Potato Mine or were hit by a volley from the Pea Shooters in the forest, death was the inevitable result.

After losing a considerable number of their own, the remaining Mammoths belatedly gathered together and prepared to advance toward the center of the territory.

Having eaten their fill, the Mammoths finally remembered their mission.

The regrouped Mammoths ran head-on into the combined beast force dispatched by Lin Yu.

The moment they met, Lin Yu's beast horde launched its offensive.

First, a dense swarm of rats charged the Mammoths. They fearlessly scuttled under the giants' feet, seeking any opportunity to burrow into their trunks.

Those that couldn't get to the trunks clung to the Mammoths' legs and began climbing up their bodies, their sights set on the massive creatures' heads.

Watching the swarm of rats trying to burrow into the Mammoths' bodies through their eyes and ears, one after another, Lin Yu couldn't help but shudder.

'This savage method of attack is just horrifying.'

Next came the wolf pack. They surrounded the herd, and whenever a Mammoth panicked and broke away from the group because a rat had burrowed inside it, the wolves would swarm in and tear the straggler to pieces.

The swarm of snakes that followed was also waiting for its chance.

The venomous snakes dodged the stomping legs, looking for a chance to strike and inject their venom. However, aside from a few exceptionally gifted ones that managed to pierce the Mammoths' tough skin, the rest of their efforts were futile; they couldn't even break through their defense.

Meanwhile, the non-venomous snakes hid quietly in the grass. Whenever a wolf was injured, they would drag it away and take it back to the center of the territory for treatment.

Thanks to Phantom, the wolf pack was a favorite of Lin Yu's. (He basically raised them like puppies.)

If any dead rats happened to be nearby, the snakes would swallow them whole to replenish their energy...

The swarm of snakes, really only there to pad the numbers, was basically just phoning it in on the battlefield.

Lin Yu was rather speechless at this scene, but since the Snake Race's presence did at least somewhat disrupt the Mammoths' advance, he didn't recall them.

The Mammoths, on the other hand, seemed completely at a loss, as if they had never encountered this kind of assault and had no way to counter it.

Faced with this combined-arms assault, the Mammoths could only stomp their feet anxiously, run wildly, and flail their trunks, but they were helpless against the tiny creatures clinging to their bodies.

Some Mammoths, driven mad by rats burrowing inside them, even gored their own companions with their tusks.

In short, despite their immense destructive power, the Mammoths suffered unexpectedly heavy losses under the siege of the beast horde.

Before long, the entire herd had fallen on the path to the World Tree, wiped out by the beast horde Lin Yu had dispatched.

Time ticked by. Soon, the Teleportation Arrays in all four directions stopped glowing; all the regular Trial Creatures had been transported.

To the north, the Half-beastmen had been annihilated by the Pea Shooters, just as expected.

To the west, only a few Harpies remained, frantically darting about in the sky under the pressure of the bird flock.

To the east, the entire Mammoth herd had been killed under the assault of the beast horde. The stunning result was somewhat beyond Lin Yu's expectations, yet it also made sense.

After all, he hadn't just sent the wolf pack, rat swarm, Snake Race, and other combat-capable beasts to the east; he had also dispatched his level-10 elite beasts.

To the south, the Beastmen had initially advanced with unstoppable momentum and broken through Lin Yu's defensive line. However, the situation stabilized after the wild boars, warthogs, and cattle joined the fray.

Luckily, they weren't very bright. They were too busy attacking the three groups of beasts charging back and forth, allowing the hidden Pea Shooters to pick off a good number of them. Otherwise, the situation in the south would have become critical.

Seeing that the battles on all four fronts were generally stable, Lin Yu chose to continue observing. He would wait for the enemy heroes to appear before intervening on the battlefield.

Meanwhile, Lin Yu took the opportunity to plant more Potato Mines just in case, especially in the east where the Mammoth herd had smashed a huge gap in his defenses.

As time passed, the light from the Teleportation Arrays grew brighter and brighter. After a blinding flash, four towering figures, each radiating a dangerous aura, appeared in the four cardinal directions of Lin Yu's territory.

The figure that emerged in the north was another Half-beastman. Compared to the previous ones, his body was wreathed in roaring flames. The moment he appeared, he cast a Flame Shield on himself, followed immediately by two consecutive, massive Flame Auras.

Everywhere the first Flame Aura passed, all the plants burst into flames.

The second Flame Aura swept past immediately after, turning everything to ash—including the Pea Shooters Lin Yu had planted.

This shocking scene left Lin Yu stunned.

Fortunately, the aura's range wasn't too large—only a 50-meter radius. In the circular area centered on the Teleportation Array, 7,850 of his Pea Shooters were instantly gone.

The remaining Pea Shooters continued to fire, and a massive barrage of Pea Bullets slammed into the Half-beastman.

At three million damage per second, even with the Flame Shield's damage reduction, the Half-beastman couldn't last more than a few seconds. In the blink of an eye, it was reduced to a pulp.

-----------------

In the west, a wind-controlling Harpy appeared. The moment she emerged, she unleashed a violently rotating ring of wind around her body, blowing away all the Pea Bullets fired at her.

She then flew up into the sky to join the other Harpies that were still fighting the bird flock. Any birds that tried to attack her along the way were torn to shreds by the ring of wind.

Watching the feathers drift down from the sky, Lin Yu reluctantly ordered his birds to stop their assault, unwilling to let them make a pointless sacrifice.

'However, to drain their stamina, he still had them harass the Harpies from time to time. Whenever the hero-level Harpy's ring of wind dissipated, the birds would swarm her until she was forced to cast it again.'

'That ring of wind is so powerful, if she has to keep maintaining it, she'll eventually run out of energy. That will be the time for the final showdown.'

After being harassed for a while, the Harpy seemed to understand the birds' strategy. Ignoring them, she led her few remaining subordinates and flew straight for the World Tree.
