The Mother Empress instantly shot back into the Hive hundreds of meters underground, rendering humanity's only remaining superweapon completely useless.
It was only after discovering that bombing runs and guided missiles were ineffective that the Federation Military abandoned reinforcing its air force, instead shifting industrial production toward anti-aircraft defenses.
Anti-aircraft Machine Cannons were especially useful. When facing the aggressive onslaught of the Black Spine Swarm, a Machine Cannon firing horizontally was far more effective than any rifle or machine gun.
