Damian Fairchild's sharp, dark eyes stared intently at her. Instead of answering, he posed a question of his own.
"Miss Quinn, the way you say that makes it sound like you'd come running into my arms the moment I called off my engagement."
Seraphina Quinn was at a loss for words.
Damian Fairchild continued, "Miss Quinn, I don't know why, but I'm particularly fond of children. I have the patience to tease and humor other people's kids, and I adore my own even more. So whether it's you or Elise York who gives me a child, I will acknowledge them..."
Seraphina Quinn cut him off. "Mr. Fairchild, you don't need to tell me all this." After a pause, she added, "And you don't need to test me. You marry your Miss York, and I'll be Mrs. Sommers. We can stay out of each other's business and maintain our boundaries. That's all."
After saying this, Seraphina Quinn stood up to leave.
She had almost reached the door when a single sentence from Damian Fairchild cut off her escape.
