Alarm bells screamed in Seraphina Quinn's mind, her thoughts turning to a dull buzz.
After a moment, she calmed down, composing a story to bluff her way through.
"Dr. Hughes suspects I've given birth? What's so surprising about that?"
"Five years ago, I had two miscarriages."
"A woman who's miscarried is obviously different from one who's never been pregnant, so you can't blame Dr. Hughes for his suspicions."
Having said that, Seraphina Quinn took a deep breath and tested the waters, her voice carefully neutral.
"But, Damian Fairchild, I'm really curious. If I had secretly given birth to your son, what would you do?"
She paused, then asked pointedly,
"Would you be more grateful? Or more thrilled? But regardless of how you felt, would you give me the title of Mrs. Fairchild?"
As soon as she finished, Damian Fairchild's concise reply came from the other end of the line: "No."
The answer was what Seraphina Quinn had expected.
