"Here to learn to read?"
After he went inside, an old man dressed in a thick scholar's robe asked.
"Yes."
"I'll take you to register."
With that, the old man led Su Qing to the registration area.
"This is a new student who wants to learn to read."
A young man sitting at the registration desk nodded. He pulled his hands back to warm them up a bit and asked without even looking up, "What's your name?"
"Su Qing. Su as in the city of Suzhou, and Qing as in the color green."
"Learning to read… that'll be five taels of silver for three months. Are you willing?"

"I am." He then took out five taels of silver and handed them over.
