Mr. Sterling was so shocked he almost dropped his rice bowl.
"Really? You and Jude?"
Mrs. Sterling quickly put down her chopsticks, both surprised and a bit suspicious. "Have you really thought this through? Don't tell me you and Jude are just trying to fool us."
Facing her parents' skepticism, Sylvia Sterling smiled calmly. "Should I give him a call?"
"Go on, call him."
"On speakerphone."
Mrs. Sterling and Mr. Sterling said at the same time.
Sylvia Sterling didn't know whether to laugh or cry. "Do I really have so little credibility with you two?"
The elder Sterlings exchanged a look, each with their own thoughts.
Mrs. Sterling: "If it were anyone else, your father and I would have believed you. But Jude..."
Sylvia Sterling: "What about him?"
Mrs. Sterling shot her a peeved glance. "Didn't you say you and Jude had no chemistry? All told, how many years have you kept him waiting? If you'd come to your senses sooner, I'd have been watching your kids by now."
