Tristan Sterling and Vivian Linton both flinched.
"What did you say?" Tristan Sterling stared at Mrs. Carter in disbelief.
"I said Miss Sinclair is too young and doesn't know how to take care of herself." Mrs. Carter, not noticing anything was amiss with Tristan, answered casually.
"No, you said..." Tristan's mind was a chaotic mess, his brain a little foggy. "She's pregnant?"
"That's right—"
"Impossible!"
Before Mrs. Carter could finish, Tristan Sterling cut her off, his voice cracking.
"You young man," Mrs. Carter huffed, amused. "I've been an obstetrician my entire life. You think I can't tell if a young woman is pregnant or not?"
When a woman is pregnant, there are subtle changes in her gait. Others might not notice, but for Mrs. Carter, with her decades of medical experience, it was impossible to be mistaken.
Tristan Sterling realized this too, but he still couldn't believe it. He said instinctively, "But she had a miscarriage just two months ago."
