Worried about interfering with her brother's studies, Evelyn Grant waited until night fell. Once her brother was asleep on the fold-out cot, she quietly went to find her attending physician.
"Doctor, can I be discharged tomorrow?"
"You want to be discharged?" The doctor raised an eyebrow, then glanced down at her chart. "Based on your condition, I wouldn't recommend it. You should stay in the hospital for observation. Your family might not know about the miscarriage, but you're well aware of it, aren't you?"
If she left the hospital and went right back to working herself to the bone, she could put herself in danger again at any moment.
The hospital was, of course, only considering what was best for the patient.
"I know, and thank you for helping me keep it a secret. But... my brother is a high school senior. If he stays here with me every day, it'll interfere with his studies! 'This will affect his whole life.'"
