Chloe Shea's call came just as Evelyn Grant had finished organizing her files and was getting ready to head to the courthouse.
There was an important hearing today. She had already fallen behind on a lot of work because of the situation with Jane Jacobs, so she had to press on even though she wasn't feeling well.
"Eve, can you come home today?"
"Today?"
"Yes! It's urgent."
The moment she heard her mother say it was urgent, Evelyn Grant's voice grew tense. "Are you not feeling well again? Is Alex home?"
"He has something to do for school, so he's not here." Chloe Shea didn't state the reason directly, simply saying, "Don't drag your brother into this. I'm telling you to come home today."
"…" Evelyn Grant sensed something was off. "Mom, I'm really swamped with work! I have two hearings today! Please, just tell me what it is. If we can handle it over the phone, then I won't have to make a special trip!"
