Summer Thorne sat quietly for a moment, her face expressionless as she stared at the small box. Finally, she reached out and opened it.
Inside was a cloisonné enamel brooch. It looked somewhat familiar, but for a moment, Summer Thorne couldn't recall where she had seen it before.
"A Mrs. Sterling from Brenheim asked me to return it on her behalf," Mason Crawford said. "Apparently, Mrs. Sutton lent it to her at a banquet two years ago. She forgot all about it and never returned it. When she happened to be in Valois recently, she remembered and wanted to give the brooch back, only to find... that there was no one from the Sutton Family left in Valois. That's why she entrusted it to me."
Now that he mentioned it, Summer Thorne remembered that Iris Pryce did seem to have a brooch like this.
The brooch was exquisite and beautiful, the kind of thing a woman would like, but it wasn't particularly valuable.
