As the realization sank in, a feeling of flustered annoyance began to bubble up inside her.

Not a single one had required such solemn treatment.

It made it seem as if she had done something extraordinary, said something momentous.
But Summer knew in her heart that it was just something she was supposed to say.
This "thank you," however, magnified her words beyond all proportion.
She felt she couldn't bear such magnification, which was the source of her vexation.
She couldn't help but glare at him, then snapped, "Who wants your thanks!"
She turned to head toward the kitchen, but Timothy York grabbed her arm. He asked in a low voice, "If not my thanks, then what do you want?"
"I want you to let go!" Summer said. "I'm thirsty. I need some water."
