Chapter 20 - Chapter 20 — Debrief

The Sanctum was quiet.

Too quiet.

Massive structures rose around them—clean lines, reinforced alloy, controlled lighting. Nothing moved unless it was meant to. No shifting walls. No hidden growth.

Order.

Sera didn't relax.

Because after Virelia—

Order felt unnatural.

They moved through the inner corridor.

Guards lined the walls.

Watching.

Not her.

Him.

Kael didn't react.

But he noticed.

Of course he did.

The doors opened.

Command chamber.

Large.

Circular.

Figures stood waiting.

High Command.

They didn't greet them.

Didn't move.

Just watched.

"Report," one of them said.

Sera stepped forward.

"Virelia is lost," she said.

No hesitation.

"The Bloom has reached full integration. It's no longer contained. It's evolving."

Silence.

"And your squad?" another voice asked.

A pause.

"Gone," she said.

The word landed.

Heavy.

Then—

All attention shifted.

To Kael.

"You were exposed," the first voice said.

Not a question.

A statement.

Kael met their gaze.

"Yes."

A pause.

"Explain."

Kael didn't rush.

Didn't hesitate.

"I interfaced with it," he said.

Silence.

That wasn't the answer they expected.

"…You what?" someone asked.

Kael didn't look away.

"I connected to the system."

The room shifted.

Subtle.

But real.

"That's not possible," one of them said.

Kael didn't argue.

"It is."

A long pause.

Then—

"Are you compromised?"

Kael answered immediately.

"No."

No hesitation.

No doubt.

The room didn't believe him.

Not fully.

But something else—

Made them hesitate.

"Prove it," one of them said.

Kael stepped forward.

The guards shifted.

Weapons ready.

He didn't react.

Didn't acknowledge them.

He looked at the floor.

Focused.

Then—

Stepped.

The ground beneath him stabilized—

Adjusted—

Before contact.

Subtle.

But visible.

Silence.

Complete.

"…You see it," someone whispered.

Kael looked up.

"I understand it."

That was worse.

Far worse.

One of the commanders stepped forward.

"…You're not infected."

A pause.

"You're something else."

Kael didn't respond.

Because he already knew.

The room shifted again.

Fear.

Not of the enemy.

Of him.

And far away—

On Virelia—

Valen smiled.

Because now—

The war had changed.
