Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: The Girl I Couldn’t Remember

The city was quieter today or maybe I was just listening differently. The neon that burned yesterday seemed softer now, like a memory I almost forgot. But the chip in my hand pulsed, insistent. Demanding attention.

I sat alone in the Archive, the shelves of glowing memories surrounding me like silent witnesses. The moment I activated the chip again, the world shifted.

Sunlight. A park I had never seen. Children laughing. A fountain in the center, water glittering like shards of glass.

And her.

She was standing there, barefoot on the wet grass, hair dark and tangled, eyes… impossibly deep.

She turned slowly, as if she knew I was watching. A smile curved her lips soft, melancholic, almost like a sigh.

I felt my chest tighten.

This is impossible.

Her gaze met mine, and for a fleeting moment, the world stopped. The laughter, the water, the sunlight… none of it mattered.

She stepped closer. Every movement was deliberate, graceful, and somehow familiar. She didn't speak, yet I felt her voice in my mind:

"Do you remember me?"

I swallowed. My fingers trembled on the chip.

"I… I don't."

But I did. Or at least, I felt I should. There was something in her eyes that whispered of a connection I had buried long ago—or maybe never truly had.

The scene shifted slightly. A market street appeared, the smell of bread and spices filling the air. She was there again, laughing with someone. But the face beside her wasn't mine. It was… another version of me?

Every detail felt wrong and right at the same time. Confusion clawed at my mind.

"Who are you?" I whispered.

She tilted her head, a soft, sad smile playing on her lips.

"I'm what you sold… what you lost… and what you're trying to find."

My heart froze.

I remembered flashes barely a second each. A picnic by a lake, a soft hand brushing against mine, a whispered promise I could not place.

And then the truth hit me.

I had sold her.

Every memory, every smile, every laugh she shared gone because of me.

The chip glowed warmer now, almost alive, almost judging.

Her lips parted slightly.

"If you want me back…"

She paused, eyes locking onto mine with a piercing intensity.

"…you'll have to pay more than you ever imagined."

I leaned back in my chair, staring at the chip as if it could answer me. The pulse from inside it seemed to echo my heartbeat. My life my choices my very soul all tangled up in this fragile, glowing shard.

And yet… despite the fear, despite the guilt, a strange warmth spread through me.

She existed in a place I could not touch, a reality I could not live, but I could not look away.

Somewhere deep inside, I knew I had to try.

No matter the cost.

Because the girl in the memory wasn't just someone I had sold. She was a part of me I had never wanted to lose.

And now… I was determined to get her back.
