Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: The Wailing Grove

The prototype Bone-Shard Hatchet felt heavy in Kane's hand, a jagged crescent of calcified ivory that hummed with a faint, predatory heat. It wasn't balanced like a Ranger's combat axe, but it felt... hungry.

Kane pushed deeper into the muscle-trees. The "Wailing Grove" earned its name as the wind whistled through the porous, tube-like trunks, creating a sound like a thousand mourning voices.

[TRAIT UNLOCKED: BLOOD-TRACKER (PASSIVE)]

A crimson mist clung to the forest floor, smelling of old iron. Kane's vision shifted; faint, glowing trails of heat appeared on the ground. Three sets of tracks. Small. Fast.

Scavengers, Kane thought. Looking for the leftovers of the Cheetah.

He didn't wait to be hunted. He climbed a muscle-tree, his new Agility (15) making the vertical ascent feel like a casual stroll. He perched on a membrane-leaf, slowing his breathing until his heartbeat synced with the tectonic thumping of the island.

Below, they emerged.

[THREAT DETECTED: BONE-SNAKE LEAPERS (RANK 1 - EARLY STAGE) x3]

They were nightmares of evolution: four-foot-long serpents with powerful, insectoid legs tucked against their ribs. Their heads were nothing but a vertical maw of serrated bone.

One Leaper paused, its snout twitching. It looked directly up at Kane's branch.

"Too late," Kane whispered.

He dropped.

The weight of his fall, combined with his increased strength, drove the Bone-Shard Hatchet clean through the first Leaper's skull. The creature didn't even twitch before it dissolved into white mist.

[CORE ABSORBED: RANK 1 BEAST ESSENCE (2/3)]

The other two reacted with terrifying speed. One coiled and launched itself like a spring, its maw wide enough to swallow Kane's head.

Kane spun mid-air, using the momentum of his first kill. He didn't swing the hatchet; he punched with the flat of the bone-blade. The impact sent the second Leaper flying into a whistling trunk, snapping its spine.

[CORE ABSORBED: RANK 1 BEAST ESSENCE (3/3)]

The third Leaper hesitated. It saw its pack-mates turned into fuel in seconds. It turned to bolt, but Kane was faster. He threw the hatchet.

The jagged bone-blade spun through the air, catching the serpent mid-leap and pinning it to a muscle-tree. The mist surged toward Kane, thicker and hotter than before.

[CRITICAL THRESHOLD REACHED]

[RANK 1 ESSENCE SATURATED: 3/3]

[INITIATING TRANSITION: EARLY STAGE \rightarrow MIDDLE STAGE]

Kane collapsed to his knees as his veins turned to liquid fire. His muscles tore and knitted back together in heartbeats, becoming denser, more efficient. The violet brand on his spine expanded, the runes glowing with a fierce, authoritative light.

[RANK 1 (MIDDLE STAGE) ACHIEVED]

[CRAFTING MANUAL UPDATED: THE TWIN-AXE PATH]

Status: PROTOTYPE \rightarrow REFINED.

New Requirement: 1x Heart-Core of a Rank 1 PEAK Beast.

Reward: The Twin Fangs of the Void (Dual Axes).

Kane stood up. The "Wailing Grove" no longer sounded like mourning. To his ears, it sounded like a challenge. He pulled his hatchet from the tree. The bone had changed—it was now sleek, dark, and veined with glowing violet circuitry.

[STATS UPDATED]

Strength: 22 (+10)

Agility: 25 (+10)

Primal Instinct: 15% (SHARPENED)

Suddenly, the wailing of the trees stopped. A silence so heavy it felt like a physical weight settled over the grove.

From the shadows of the massive "Abyssal Ribcage" cliffside, a shadow detached itself. It was twice the size of the Cheetah, its body covered in shimmering, obsidian scales that vibrated at a frequency that made Kane's nose bleed.

[WARNING: AREA BOSS DETECTED]

[TARGET: THE SHADOW-STALKER KRAKEN (LAND-VARIANT)]

[RANK: 1 (PEAK STAGE)]

"There's my Heart-Core," Kane said, a dark, jagged smile tugging at his lips. He gripped his hatchet, his silver-amber eyes locking onto the beast. "Let's see if you're as tough as you look."
