The impact shuddered up my arms as my cane cleaved through wood and stone, splitting the chair in half and cracking the floor beneath it.
Gasps erupted around the chamber. I felt the researchers stumble backward, their essences spiking with alarm. The guards' stood at alert and Venti's siblings went rigid with shock.
Fashire stood a few paces to my left.
He had moved faster than I could track, and faster than I had ever sensed him move before.
That speed of his was going to be a problem.
"What are you doing?!" His voice cracked through the chamber, outraged and bewildered.
I straightened slowly, my cane still trembling from the force of the impact.
"A good whack," I said coolly, "should reset your head and give you a little bit of sense."
"I hadn't even finished speaking!"
