I did not know where to begin. And I wasn't even sure if I could even entirely trust this person.
But it wasn't like I had any other option.
Effer stood motionless, her sightless eyes fixed on me with an intensity that made my skin prickle. The weight of her presence had not lessened. If anything, it had settled deeper into the room, pressing against my heightened senses.
She was waiting.
"I..." I swallowed.
"Before that," she continued, "I understand your wariness. Again, I must apologize for the sudden intrusion." She paused. "I should also mention… whatever you need to know about this world, I am willing to provide. Consider it an exchange. Your information for mine."
I stared at her.
She had asked me earlier not to omit anything. As if she already knew I would be tempted to hold things back.
"Why?"
She tilted her head, surprised by my question.
"You already know something," I said carefully. "About me. About what I am?"
