The servants' hall was buzzing like a disturbed hive.

I sat at the long table near the back, eating from four small portions of my cooling breakfast. Around me, the other servants whispered and gestured and leaned across the table to trade scraps of gossip like contraband. The air was thick with it.

"Where were you? You should have been at the eastern side of the courtyard!"

"She walked out. Right in the middle of His Majesty's address."

"Walked out? She simply stood up and left? Without permission?"

"That can't be right…"

"It did happen! Without so much as a bow. The royals were still speaking when she turned her back on him and just left!"

"Who does that? A human for that matter?"

I had already seen it all with my own eyes. I remembered the giddy rush of vindication that followed me that night as I wondered what her punishment would be.

I hoped Lord Fashire had not made quick work of her.
