Becca clutched her hand to herself, hurt written all over her face.
Could I even really blame her? I had never been this assertive. It was only normal she would think I hadn't been myself back then.
"Whatever you're thinking, it's not true!"
Her lips thinned, then quivered. She looked away and gritted out. "Edna is gone. Is there anything else you need me to do for you?"
I shrank back, stung.
She had suddenly become formal and was now acting like a servant?
"Becca—"
"Let me escort you out. You need the fresh air as the doctor described."
She turned and started walking.
I rushed after her, my chest tight with words I didn't know how to say.
"Becca!"
"There are a few gardens nearby. They have pleasant views and there are pets there," she continued, as if I hadn't just called out to her. "The—"
"Becca, listen to me—"
"If you require refreshment, I can arrange for—"
