Chapter 12 - The Darkness Watches

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Nobody even dared to blink.

For several long seconds, the forest seemed to have forgotten how to exist. The wind had died completely, leaving the enormous trees motionless beneath the moonlight. Even the insects had fallen silent, as though every living creature within the forest had sensed the same presence that had appeared before Alex and his companions.

Alex stared at the exact spot where the glowing red eyes had vanished.

His heart hammered violently against his ribs, each beat seeming impossibly loud in the suffocating silence. His hands had tightened into fists without him realizing it, and a cold sensation crawled slowly down his spine.

Beside him, Charmander's tail flame burned higher than normal.

Not from excitement.

Not from determination.

From fear.

Pure, instinctive fear.

The little Fire-type stood rigidly at Alex's side, its claws slightly raised and its eyes fixed upon the darkness between the trees. Charmander had faced wild Pokémon before. It had battled, trained, explored dangerous places, and even encountered creatures far stronger than itself.

But whatever had been watching them had frightened it in a way Alex had never seen before.

Yellow slowly backed toward Alex.

Her voice came out as barely more than a whisper.

"Tell me you saw that."

Alex didn't take his eyes off the trees.

"I saw it."

Damian's voice was unusually quiet.

"I saw it too."

Yellow looked toward him.

"You did?"

Damian nodded.

His hand had already moved toward one of the Poké Balls attached to his belt. His fingers rested against it, ready to release a Pokémon at the slightest sign of danger.

For the first time since Alex had met him…

Damian looked genuinely nervous.

That alone was enough to make Alex uneasy.

Damian was rarely intimidated by anything. Even when situations became dangerous, he usually remained calm and analytical, searching for a solution instead of allowing fear to control him.

Seeing him like this made Alex realize just how serious their situation had become.

The forest remained still.

Nothing moved.

Nothing spoke.

Nothing revealed itself.

Yet all three of them knew one thing.

Something was there.

Something powerful.

Something that had been watching them from the darkness.

And whatever it was…

It was waiting.

The Darkness Watches

Minutes passed.

The group remained frozen in place, listening to the silence and watching the surrounding trees.

Alex expected an attack.

A roar.

A sudden movement.

Anything.

But nothing happened.

No creature emerged from the shadows.

No branches snapped.

No enormous footsteps shook the ground.

There was only silence.

Eventually, Alex slowly exhaled.

"I don't think it's attacking."

Yellow immediately looked at him as though he had completely lost his mind.

"That's supposed to make me feel better?"

Alex shrugged awkwardly.

"A little."

"It doesn't."

"Fair."

Damian continued staring into the trees. His eyes narrowed as he studied the darkness, searching for even the smallest movement.

"It's studying us."

Alex turned toward him.

"What?"

Damian pointed toward the direction where the red eyes had disappeared.

"The way it moved. It didn't charge us. It didn't even come particularly close."

He lowered his hand.

"If it wanted us dead…"

Damian paused.

He didn't finish the sentence.

He didn't need to.

Everyone understood what he meant.

Whatever was hiding in the forest had already demonstrated that it was strong enough to frighten them without even revealing itself properly.

If it had truly wanted to attack, it probably could have done so already.

Instead, it had watched them.

Observed them.

Measured them.

Like a predator deciding whether its prey was worth pursuing.

The thought sent another chill through Alex.

Because being attacked was frightening.

But being deliberately studied by something stronger than you?

That was somehow worse.

Alex glanced toward the surrounding trees.

"Then we need to get out of here."

Damian nodded.

"Agreed."

Yellow quickly pointed down the trail.

"Excellent. For once, everyone agrees. Let's go."

Moving Forward

"We can't stay here."

Alex finally broke the silence.

Yellow immediately nodded.

"Best idea you've had all day."

Damian gave a short nod before beginning to move.

The group cautiously continued along the forest path.

Nobody relaxed.

Every snapped twig made them turn around.

Every rustling bush made Charmander raise its claws.

Every shifting shadow seemed to carry the possibility that the creature was following them.

Alex kept looking over his shoulder.

Nothing.

The forest appeared empty.

But he couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched.

The deeper they traveled, the stranger the forest became.

The trees grew enormous, their trunks so thick that several people could have stood shoulder-to-shoulder and still struggled to wrap their arms around them. Some appeared to be hundreds of years old, perhaps even older. Their roots twisted across the forest floor like enormous serpents, rising from the soil before disappearing beneath layers of moss and fallen leaves.

Thick vines hung from the branches overhead.

Moss covered nearly every surface.

Even the rocks were coated in green.

The air itself seemed different.

Heavier.

Colder.

Harder to breathe.

It felt as though the forest had become an ancient world completely separated from civilization.

A world that had existed long before humans had ever stepped foot inside it.

Charmander suddenly stopped.

"Char…"

Alex immediately looked down.

"What is it?"

Charmander raised one claw and pointed toward the path ahead.

Everyone followed its gaze.

Then froze.

Footprints.

More footprints.

But these weren't like the older tracks they had been following.

These were fresh.

Very fresh.

The mud surrounding them was still wet, and several broken branches lay across the path where something enormous had recently passed.

Alex crouched beside one of the impressions.

The footprint was massive.

Far larger than any Pokémon Alex had encountered before.

Damian crouched beside him and examined the ground carefully.

His expression darkened.

"It's following us."

Yellow's face immediately lost color.

"What?"

Damian pointed toward the trail behind them.

"The tracks weren't here before."

Alex looked back.

He understood immediately.

The creature wasn't simply living somewhere inside the forest.

It was moving.

It had been following them.

Tracking them.

Watching their movements from somewhere beyond their sight.

Yellow swallowed nervously.

"I suddenly miss civilization."

Alex couldn't help himself.

"Me too."

The Abandoned Camp

About thirty minutes later, the forest suddenly opened.

The trees thinned, revealing a large clearing surrounded by ancient trunks.

The group stepped into it cautiously.

Then stopped.

There was a campsite.

Or at least…

What remained of one.

Torn tents lay scattered across the clearing. Wooden poles had been snapped in half, while bags, cooking equipment, tools, and other supplies were strewn across the ground.

An abandoned campfire pit sat in the center of the clearing, its ashes long since gone cold.

The entire campsite looked as though it had been destroyed by a violent storm.

Except there had been no storm.

Alex slowly stepped forward.

"Someone was here."

Damian nodded.

"Recently."

Yellow looked around uneasily.

"Then where are they?"

Nobody answered.

Alex's eyes moved across the clearing.

Something about the place felt wrong.

Not merely abandoned.

Destroyed.

There was a difference.

A camp that had been abandoned would have supplies left behind in an organized manner. This place looked as though the people who had been here had left in a hurry.

A very desperate hurry.

Yellow suddenly pointed toward one of the ruined tents.

"Look."

Everyone turned.

A massive slash ran across the canvas.

Alex approached it carefully.

It wasn't a simple tear caused by weather or age.

The edges of the fabric had been cut cleanly.

Something sharp had done it.

Something very sharp.

Alex felt another chill run through him.

Then he noticed something near the fire pit.

A small notebook.

It was old and dirty, its cover covered in mud and scratches. Several pages were bent, and the edges had been damaged by moisture.

Alex carefully picked it up.

"Someone's journal."

Damian stepped closer.

"Anything readable?"

Alex opened it.

Most of the pages were ruined, but several entries were still legible.

The handwriting was messy.

Rushed.

Panicked.

Alex began reading aloud.

Day 4

"The tracks are getting larger."

"Professor Hayes believes we've found evidence of an unknown species."

"The others are excited."

"I'm not."

Alex turned the page.

The next entry was written several days later.

Day 6

"Something is watching us at night."

"I saw red eyes outside my tent."

"Nobody believes me."

Yellow shifted uncomfortably.

Alex continued reading.

Day 7

"The noises are getting closer."

"We found another broken collar."

"Whatever destroyed it must possess unbelievable strength."

Damian's expression immediately changed.

"The collars again."

Alex nodded.

He remembered the strange collars they had previously discovered.

Whatever was happening in this forest was connected to them.

Alex turned another page.

The handwriting had become even more unstable.

The letters were uneven, as though the person had struggled to keep their hands from shaking.

Day 8

"Professor Hayes is missing."

"We searched for hours."

"We only found his backpack."

The three of them exchanged nervous glances.

Yellow's voice was quiet.

"Do you think…?"

Alex didn't answer.

He didn't want to finish the thought.

Instead, he continued reading.

Day 9

"We were wrong."

"This isn't a Pokémon we've discovered."

"This thing doesn't want to be found."

"If anyone reads this…"

Alex's eyes moved to the final line.

"Leave."

Silence filled the clearing.

Alex slowly lowered the notebook.

But the final page caught his attention.

It was badly damaged, with several sections torn away.

Only a few words remained.

"It's behind us."

"RUN—"

The entry ended there.

Yellow slowly lowered her head.

Nobody spoke.

They didn't have to.

The implications were obvious.

Whoever had written the journal had been terrified.

They had discovered something they didn't understand.

Something that had been hunting them.

And judging from the unfinished final sentence…

They hadn't escaped.

The Roar Returns

Then—

ROOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRR!!

The sound exploded across the forest.

It was far louder than the roar they had heard earlier.

The ground shook violently beneath their feet.

Trees trembled.

Leaves rained from the branches.

A flock of frightened Pokémon suddenly burst from the canopy and disappeared into the night sky.

Yellow stumbled backward.

Alex immediately grabbed her arm and steadied her.

Charmander covered its ears.

"CHAR!!"

Even Damian looked shaken.

The roar seemed to come from everywhere at once.

Ahead.

Behind.

Above.

Below.

The sound reverberated through the trees and bounced between the cliffs, making it impossible to determine where the creature actually was.

Alex's heart raced.

The roar continued.

And continued.

And continued.

Then—

It stopped.

Instantly.

The silence that followed was somehow worse than the roar itself.

It felt as though the entire forest had frozen.

As though every living thing was waiting for whatever happened next.

Alex slowly lowered his arm.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody moved.

Then Charmander pointed toward the cliffside.

Alex followed its gaze.

And his eyes widened.

The Discovery

A cave entrance.

Hidden behind thick vines.

Halfway up a nearby cliff.

Damian followed Alex's gaze.

His eyes widened.

"Guys…"

Yellow looked toward him.

"What?"

Damian pointed.

"There."

The vines partially concealed an enormous opening in the cliff.

The cave entrance was far too large to have been created by an ordinary Pokémon.

Its jagged opening resembled the mouth of some ancient sleeping beast.

Dark.

Silent.

Waiting.

Alex stared at it.

Then he looked down.

The footprints continued through the clearing.

One after another.

Massive impressions pressed deep into the mud.

They led directly toward the cave.

Every single one.

Alex's stomach dropped.

Suddenly, the mystery wasn't a mystery anymore.

The tracks.

The roars.

The glowing red eyes.

The abandoned camp.

The destroyed collars.

Everything pointed toward that cave.

Yellow stared at the entrance in horror.

"Please tell me we're not going inside."

Alex looked at Damian.

Damian looked at Alex.

Then both looked toward the cave.

Yellow's expression changed.

"Oh, come on!"

Alex sighed.

"We need answers."

"Answers are overrated!"

Damian calmly replied.

"If we leave, whatever is inside may continue following us."

Yellow stared at him.

"That was not reassuring."

"I wasn't trying to reassure you."

"Great."

Inside the Cave

A few minutes later, the three trainers cautiously entered the cave.

Darkness swallowed them immediately.

The temperature dropped sharply.

The air became cold enough that Alex could feel it against his skin.

Water dripped somewhere in the distance.

Drip.

A pause.

Drip.

Another pause.

Drip.

The sound echoed throughout the enormous cavern.

Charmander's tail became their only reliable source of light.

Its small flame illuminated only a few feet ahead, leaving everything beyond that distance hidden beneath an impenetrable darkness.

The deeper they traveled, the larger the tunnel became.

At first, Alex assumed they were walking through an ordinary cave passage.

Then the walls began to widen.

The ceiling rose higher.

The ground flattened.

Eventually, the passage became so enormous that it no longer felt like a cave.

It felt like an underground chamber.

A gigantic cavern carved into the earth.

Alex looked upward.

He couldn't even see the ceiling.

"How deep does this place go?"

Damian shook his head.

"I don't know."

Then Charmander suddenly stopped.

Alex looked down.

"What is it?"

Charmander didn't answer.

It simply stared at the ground.

Alex followed its gaze.

His blood ran cold.

Bones.

Dozens of them.

Then hundreds.

Large bones.

Small bones.

Bones belonging to Pokémon of different shapes and sizes.

Some were ancient and nearly buried beneath layers of dirt and dust.

Others appeared disturbingly recent.

Yellow slowly covered her mouth.

"Oh… no."

The bones were scattered throughout the cavern.

Some were piled together near the walls.

Others lay alone in the darkness.

There was no doubt anymore.

Whatever lived here had been feeding.

Alex forced himself to look away.

Then something caught the light.

Metal.

Near one of the cavern walls.

Alex walked toward it.

His footsteps echoed softly across the stone floor.

He crouched down.

His heart sank.

Another collar.

But unlike the previous ones…

This one wasn't broken.

It was melted.

The metal had warped and twisted, as though exposed to an unbelievable amount of heat.

Damian stared at it.

"What kind of Pokémon can do that?"

Nobody answered.

Because nobody knew.

Then—

THUD.

The sound echoed through the cavern.

Everyone froze.

Alex slowly looked toward the darkness ahead.

Nothing.

Then—

THUD.

This time, the sound was louder.

Closer.

Yellow's breathing became shallow.

Damian reached for a Poké Ball.

THUD.

The cavern trembled.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

Small stones rolled across the floor.

THUD.

THUD.

THUD.

Something massive was moving through the darkness.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

Approaching them.

Every step sent another vibration through the cavern floor.

Alex could feel each impact beneath his shoes.

Yellow's voice was barely a whisper.

"Alex…"

"I know."

Another step.

THUD.

Charmander's flame flickered violently.

Then…

Two enormous red eyes opened within the darkness.

Alex's entire body went rigid.

They were much larger than before.

Far larger.

Each glowing eye was nearly the size of a person.

They stared directly at the three trainers.

Ancient.

Powerful.

Predatory.

And completely aware.

The darkness surrounding the eyes began to shift.

Something enormous was approaching.

Then a deep sound rolled through the cavern.

Not a roar.

Not a growl.

A voice.

A real voice.

Ancient.

Deep.

Terrifying.

Unknown Creature:

"…Humans."

The three trainers froze.

For several seconds, none of them could process what they had just heard.

Pokémon didn't speak like that.

Not normally.

Not with a voice that carried the weight of something impossibly old.

The creature took another step forward.

THUD.

Its enormous silhouette slowly emerged from the darkness.

First came the outline of its massive body.

Then its shoulders.

Then its claws.

Then the faint reflection of something ancient covering its body.

Alex's breathing stopped.

He had imagined countless possibilities.

A powerful Pokémon.

An unknown species.

Some ancient predator.

But none of those possibilities prepared him for what stood before them.

The creature towered over the cavern.

Its presence alone seemed to make the air heavier.

Its glowing red eyes remained fixed on Alex.

Then Damian suddenly whispered something.

"Grandfather was right."

Alex looked toward him.

"What?"

Damian's eyes remained locked on the creature.

"Ancient Pokémon aren't extinct."

The creature stepped fully into the light.

Alex's blood turned to ice.

Because Damian's grandfather had been right.

The ancient Pokémon had survived.

It had been hiding beneath the forest for centuries.

Perhaps even millennia.

And now…

It knew they were here.

The creature slowly lowered its enormous head.

Its eyes narrowed.

Then it spoke again.

"Why… have you awakened me?"

Alex couldn't move.

Yellow couldn't speak.

Even Charmander stood completely frozen.

The ancient creature stared at them for several long seconds.

Then its gaze shifted toward the melted collar lying on the ground.

Its expression changed.

For the first time…

Alex saw something other than hunger in those ancient eyes.

He saw anger.

Deep.

Ancient.

Burning anger.

And Alex suddenly realized something terrifying.

Maybe the creature hadn't been hunting them.

Maybe…

It had been running from something else.
