Chapter 57 - Chapter 57– The Missing Piece

Nobody spoke.

The silence between them had changed again.

Not tense.

Not calm.

Careful.

Like every word mattered now.

Kushina looked from one masked figure to the next.

Then back toward the ancient seals surrounding the clearing.

"…you're asking me to believe you…"

The first figure answered quietly.

"No."

A pause.

"We're asking you to question everyone."

That wasn't reassuring.

It was worse.

"…including you?"

"Yes."

Another pause.

"Especially us."

Kushina folded her arms.

"…that's either incredibly honest…"

"…or incredibly manipulative…"

The second figure inclined its head slightly.

"It can be both."

Silence.

She hated that answer.

Mostly because it made sense.

Kushina's eyes drifted toward the glowing seal circle beneath her feet.

"…if Akane rejected your solution…"

She looked back up.

"…why did she stay?"

The figures remained silent.

Long enough that she wondered if they would answer.

Finally—

"She believed she could change us."

A pause.

"She almost did."

Kushina blinked.

"…almost?"

The third figure spoke quietly.

"There was disagreement."

Another pause.

"Some believed there was another way."

"…and the others?"

"They believed time had already run out."

Silence.

Something clicked inside Kushina.

Not everything.

Just enough.

"…you split."

"Yes."

The answer came immediately.

"The organization you see today…"

A pause.

"…is not the one Akane joined."

Kushina's eyes widened.

"…what?"

The first figure looked toward one of the weathered stone pillars.

"There was once debate."

"Compromise."

"Restraint."

Another pause.

"Fear ended all three."

Cold silence settled over the clearing.

"…fear of what?"

The answer came without hesitation.

"Kurama."

The pressure inside her stirred instantly.

Interested.

Listening.

"…they're talking about me…"

"…they're talking about us…"

Kushina ignored him.

"…you're afraid of the Nine-Tails."

"No."

The figure looked directly at her.

"We're afraid of what fear makes people do."

That answer lingered.

Longer than it should have.

The wind shifted again.

This time carrying distant footsteps.

Faint.

Almost impossible to hear.

The first figure noticed.

So did Kushina.

"…someone's here…"

"…yes…"

The masked figures didn't react.

Not alarmed.

Not surprised.

Like they had expected it.

The first figure spoke quietly.

"They followed you."

Kushina's head snapped up.

"…what?"

"They're close."

Silence.

Her stomach dropped.

"…Daichi…"

"…Minato…"

She hadn't noticed.

Not once.

The realization stung.

Not because they had followed her.

Because she hadn't sensed them.

"You knew."

"Yes."

"…why didn't you stop them?"

The figure answered calmly.

"Because this meeting was never only for you."

Silence.

Kushina frowned.

"…what does that mean?"

The figure slowly turned toward the forest beyond the clearing.

Its voice remained steady.

"They deserve answers too."

That caught her completely off guard.

"…you're inviting them?"

"No."

A pause.

"We're allowing them."

Before Kushina could respond—

a familiar voice echoed from beyond the trees.

"That's far enough."

Daichi.

Sharp.

Controlled.

Close.

Kushina spun toward the forest.

Two figures stepped into the clearing.

Daichi first.

Minato just behind him.

Neither looked surprised.

Neither lowered their guard.

Daichi's eyes met Kushina's for only a second.

Relief.

Gone almost instantly.

Replaced by focus.

His gaze shifted toward the masked figures.

"You wanted her here."

"Yes."

"And you knew we'd follow."

"Yes."

Silence.

Daichi's jaw tightened.

"…then stop hiding."

The first figure looked at him for a long moment.

Then—

slowly—

reached for its mask.

Kushina's heart skipped.

"…wait…"

The fingers stopped against the edge of the mask.

Not removing it.

Not yet.

"You are not ready for that truth."

Silence.

Then—

the figure lowered its hand again.

"…not today."

Daichi didn't move.

Neither did Minato.

But something had changed.

For the first time—

the Organization had admitted there were truths even they were withholding.

And somehow—

that made them feel more dangerous than ever.
