Chapter 55 - Chapter 55 -Two Truths

The hesitation lasted less than a second.

But Kushina saw it.

And once she had—

she couldn't ignore it.

Silence settled over the clearing.

The three masked figures remained perfectly still.

Watching.

Waiting.

Not attacking.

"…they hesitated…"

"…yes…"

"…interesting…"

Kushina folded her arms.

"You didn't answer my question."

The first figure spoke quietly.

"We answered part of it."

"No."

Her voice sharpened.

"You avoided it."

Another pause.

Then—

"Yes."

That surprised her.

No excuses.

No denial.

Just honesty.

"…why?"

The second figure stepped forward.

"Because the answer is not simple."

Kushina let out a dry laugh.

"Try me."

Silence.

Then—

"Ren is dying."

The words hit immediately.

Hard.

Kushina frowned.

"…because of you."

"Yes."

Another pause.

"And because of what he carries."

Silence.

Kushina's heartbeat slowed.

"…what does that mean?"

The third figure spoke for the first time.

"His chakra network is collapsing."

A beat.

"The seals are the only reason he is still alive."

Kushina stared at them.

"…you're expecting me to believe that?"

"No."

The figure answered calmly.

"We expect you to question it."

That wasn't the answer she expected.

"…show me."

The three figures looked at each other.

Almost imperceptibly.

Then the first one nodded.

Another seal beneath the clearing began to glow.

The air shimmered again.

This time—

not memories.

Medical records.

Handwritten notes.

Seal diagrams.

Drawings of chakra pathways.

A younger Ren.

Healthy.

Laughing.

Then—

months later.

The same boy.

His chakra pathways torn apart.

Dark energy spreading through his body.

The images continued.

Failed treatments.

Broken seals.

Collapsed experiments.

Kushina's expression slowly changed.

"…this…"

"…they're not lying…"

"…not completely…"

One final image appeared.

Ren screaming as black chakra spread through his entire body.

Then—

a new seal.

The same one now covering his skin.

The spread slowed.

Not stopped.

Slowed.

Silence filled the clearing.

Kushina looked at the figures again.

"…you kept him alive."

"Yes."

"…and tortured him."

Another pause.

"Yes."

Cold honesty.

No excuses.

No attempt to justify it.

That somehow felt worse.

The first figure finally spoke again.

"Both statements are true."

Kushina didn't answer.

Because she couldn't.

The world had suddenly become much more complicated.

The figure continued.

"If we remove the seals…"

A pause.

"He dies."

"If we keep them…"

Another.

"He suffers."

Silence.

"There has not yet been a third option."

Kushina lowered her eyes.

"…yet…"

The word slipped out before she realized it.

The figure noticed immediately.

"Yes."

Another pause.

"That is why you are here."

Kushina slowly looked back up.

"…what."

The masked figure held her gaze.

"You believe there is always another choice."

Silence.

"You stopped yourself."

"You refused to sacrifice Ren."

"You continue searching for another path."

Another pause.

"Akane stopped searching."

The words echoed through the clearing.

Heavy.

Real.

"She accepted impossible choices."

A beat.

"You refuse to."

Kushina's chest tightened.

For the first time—

she wasn't sure if they were manipulating her.

Or simply telling the truth.

Then the first figure spoke again.

Quietly.

"We invited you here for one reason."

Kushina narrowed her eyes.

"…which is?"

The answer came without hesitation.

"We want to know if you can succeed where Akane failed."

Silence fell over the clearing once more.

And for the first time—

Kushina realized something terrifying.

This meeting had never been about recruiting her.

It had been about judging her.
